OSU vs. TCU Postgame Quotes
November 02, 2019 | Cowboy Football
OSU Head Coach Mike Gundy
Opening Statement
"A very well played game by our team. We were a very disciplined team, with 37 yards of penalties. We rushed for over 300 yards and had very minimal turnovers. They took care of the football. We averaged almost eight yards a snap. Obviously Chuba was fantastic. The quarterback handled himself well. The defense had a stretch of, I think five or six series in a row, where we held them to turnovers: fumbles, interceptions or punts. The guys really played well. We were able to get some big plays, which gives us a chance. I couldn't be any more proud of our special teams plans, our schemes and the way we executed them. We took No. 1 out of the game. Special teams wise, that was a big accomplishment for us and defensively we did a pretty good job with them also. We knew going in we knew we needed to kick and cover well and punt and cover well and I thought that those guys were fantastic, so it was a good win for our team. We competed and found a way to get it done in the end."Â
Â
On playing without Tylan Wallace, Tre Sterling and Johnny Wilson
"I actually apologized to the defensive staff. I got a little too excited the last two minutes there, but I really wanted this game for the players, going through what they went through in the middle of the week. We talk a lot about our culture and staying the course and then our coaching staff not changing plays and running what we run so other guys can make plays. It's a lot easier said than done, but they did. It was a weird deal to lose those three guys basically in one day. I was really proud of our coaches and schemes and staying with it, then our players recovering from it, because it's a shock to them. That's their buddy and when that happens it's unfortunate. It's a tough game and sometimes that happens and I was really proud of them as much for this game as I have been for any in a long, long time."
Â
On Wallace's injury and playing without him
"I don't really have to explain Tylan, but what's difficult and what I told the team when I met with them Thursday night, the most difficult thing for a coach is when a player gets hurt, especially guys who give everything they have to the organization. Tylan is a special talent. We all know this. But he's very humble. He's very unselfish, he's a tremendous player and he's a very, very hard worker. When you lose guys like that for a while, because he will rally back, it's just difficult. It's hard for a coach to swallow. It just almost ruined my week when I left the office. When I'm here, I don't flinch; I stay the course. When I get home it just makes me sick to where I can barely function at all. It's hard to lose a guy like that, not only as a player but as a person. Same thing with Johnny. He's a vet. He's a really good offensive lineman. He's a warrior. It's hard to lose a guy like that. Tre has been playing well all year. He has been our defensive player of the week I don't know how many times. I've done this a long time, and it was a challenge for me to keep my head up and say it's going to be OK. Credit goes to the team. They understand and the assistants did a good job staying the course.
Â
On becoming bowl eligible
"The bowl eligibility is special for the university. It's special for our organization, the players, the families and everybody to get that. That is a big deal, but more importantly, that's the first time I've lost my composure in a long time as a head coach and I apologized to everybody, but I wanted it so bad because I wanted them to learn that life lesson, that it's OK to face adversity and find a way to be successful. The bowl just makes it that much better. I didn't even remember that until somebody told me afterwards. I should've, but that's not where my mind was at that time. We didn't give up big plays for touchdowns. We didn't give up a big quarterback scramble. Their quarterback is a good player and is going to be a good quarterback in this league. This league is going to be tired for him over the next few years. We were plus two or three in the turnovers and we didn't get penalized. We were a disciplined team. That has really been the key for most teams in this league this year and particularly us.Â
Â
On Hubbard rushing for more than 200 yards against Gary Patterson's defense
"He's really good. He always has been and particularly against the rush. I just looked, Chuba had 223. I don't know if anybody has ever rushed for 200 yards on Gary. I was going to say, in his career I doubt anybody has every rushed 200 yards on him. He has been pretty good against the run for 20 years or however long he has been a head coach and probably as a coordinator. He ran his plays. He has done the same thing he has always done for the most part. The difference being that when Chuba gets through there, nobody can catch him. That makes him different from other players."
Â
On Colby Harvell Peel
"He buys in. He has been in the program now for two years. He is a good example of a guy who works hard. He's quiet. He's humble. He likes to make plays. One of his interceptions was a great catch. I didn't think he was going to get to it. He kind of Willie Mays'd it a little bit and went over the shoulder to make a really good catch. He has been a really good player for us and a really good player. He got hurt at Iowa State and didn't practice this week but very little."
Â
On the defense playing with "swagger"
"They're fired up. This is a difficult league to play defense in. I've told them, you guys have to generate some energy among yourselves. Coaches can try to do it, but we can't. We don't play in games. What you're talking about are things that we're telling them. Somebody has to generate some energy and some power and momentum. They're doing better. Obviously, the way they finished at Iowa State made them feel better about themselves and as we went into halftime I think they had gotten us three drives in a row or maybe four. So, when we came out and made two small adjustments and it worked well because we gave up one touchdown and a field goal at the end. They made good adjustments because those three drives prior to half, TCU was rolling on us pretty well."
OSU Coordinators
Defensive Coordinator Jim Knowles
On forcing turnovers
"Sometimes, they come in bunches. We were able to start picking them up last game. I feel like our guys are playing with a lot more confidence. They know where they are supposed to be and they are cashing in. Kolby Harvell-Peel is just playing lights out and he has great football intelligence. He not only gets to where he is supposed to be, but he makes plays and reads the offense. That's the biggest thing you have to do in the Big 12, you have to do a lot of things post-snap."
Â
Offensive Coordinator Sean Gleeson
On the offense
"We had a really good plan and we have tough hard-nosed players who don't balk in the face of adversity. What's fun about coaching against a coach like Gary Patterson is that he brings out the best in everybody, whether it's your players or your staff. It was all hands on deck today. Credit to Chuba and all the guys up front. When you can rush for that many yards against a historically really good run defense, it just speaks to the character and the toughness of all of our guys."
Â
OSU Players
Tyler Lacy
On the energy in the locker room after back-to-back wins
"It brings a lot of inspiration to the locker room. You can tell in the locker room that everyone is excited. We're back. It just feels good that the horses are rolling and moving."
Â
On the defense setting the tone throughout the game
"Those first three-and-outs that we had really destroyed their offense. It gave the defense so much inspiration to go out there and really get after it out there on the field early on."
Â
Jarrick Bernard
On what this win does for the team going into a bye week
"It builds confidence for sure. We know that we can't relax for any part of the season. We just have to keep building on this and getting better every single week."
Â
On the defensive mindset early on in the game
"We just came out and knew what we had to do from the jump. We trusted coach's gameplan, executed on that and played hard the entire game."
Â
Dillon Stoner
On how the team is feeling after back-to-back wins
"That's a huge win going into the bye week. We get a chance to heal up. We had two devastating injuries, but we're going to go to work, go to practice and get prepared for Kansas."
Â
On how his personal game affected the team
"It was awesome. I am incredibly grateful that I was able to step up and make those plays for my team. I wish [Tylan Wallace] was out there doing it, but I know that he's going to recover fast and be ready to go."
Â
Ry Schneider
On the energy around the team
"The energy is just boosted. We stuck to the plan. We were losing a few games in a row, but now that we have two-straight wins, we just want to keep it going."
Â
On how the offensive line helped Hubbard
"Oh man, with Chuba all you have to do is get in the way of people and he'll just run right around them."
Â
TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
"We're just good enough to get beat by anyone this late. We probably gave up 200 or 300 yards of defense for guys just not doing their job. You have to give Oklahoma State credit. The times we do the things we need to do football-wise, we can win ball games. Still as bad as we played, it was still a seven-point ballgame on the road. A seven-point ballgame on the road as bad as we played. So, when we can play well and figure it out, we can beat anyone and when we don't we aren't going to. You can't turn the ball over and you can't give up big plays like we gave up today. It's pretty simple."
Â
On holding Chuba Hubbard in the first half versus the second half
"One guy slanted one way and the other guy slanted the opposite. First touchdown got them to 24."
Â
On Chuba Hubbard
"They are good players. I have to give them credit. Bottom line our kids fought back. This is one ballgame and we have to move forward. We got Baylor. They had an off week and they played on Thursday night, so they had extra time to get ready for us this week. We have to get ready to play."
Â
On Max Duggan
"Here is what you guys need to understand. We lost. I don't analyze it like you guys do. Bottom line is we win or we lose. We lost. We definitely didn't do enough on offense and we definitely did not do enough on defense to do what we need to do. The bottom line is I hope he is okay. We have to get back and make sure we are ready to play next week."
Â
On the value of this game
"There is no value in this game. There is no value in losing. Once you put value in losing then you need to quit. It's simple. There is no in between, that is how we built this program. There are no moral victories. This is game eight, we've all been together long enough, we know what we did and didn't do. There were times on both sides of the ball and to be honest with you the place we need to improve is punting the ball."
Â
TCU Players
Jalen Reagor
On the loss
"We got to get to six. We have to keep working and find ways to win."Â
Â
On frustration this seasonÂ
"That is the reason is being so close. You get tired of being so close to winning games that come down to three or five plays that separate the game. It's frustrating, but we just have to go back to work."
Â
On the team
"I have to be there for my team. Whatever I have to do, whatever position I need to play I will do it to win."
Â
Garrett Wallow
On Chuba Hubbard
"Hubbard is a very good back. I give credit to Oklahoma State's offense. A lot of it had to do with execution, which we didn't do today."
On the 92-yard run
"Execution and a couple guys were not doing their job. For us to stop big plays like that all 11 guys have to do their job."
Â
On the conference
"We're in a league where the competition is high and each game you go to you have to play the same. You can't look down on teams. We are good enough to beat or lose to any team. Every game needs to be taken the same."
