Oklahoma State vs. Kansas Postgame Quotes
November 16, 2019 | Cowboy Football
Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike Gundy
Opening Statement
"That was a good win for us. I told the team that I was proud of the way they started fast. From the first kickoff they started fast, really in all three phases. I wish we would have kicked the ball a little better, field goal-wise, but other than that we were pretty good. We were very aggressive on defense. They were able to contain them. Their running back [Pooka Williams Jr.] is a good player. He breaks one in just about every game, so we did a good job of containing him. We got some pressure on the quarterback [Carter Stanley]. On third down, we had an unbelievable day on defense. They went 6-17 on third down, and over half of them were over third and 10. Overall, the guys played really well. I'll let them enjoy this one and then come back to work tomorrow and get going and get ready to play the next one."
On Dru Brown's first touchdown pass
"He's been so good. He was a captain of this game. That tells you what kind of young man we are dealing with. He stayed focused and everyone knows that it is difficult to do what he is doing. He hasn't flinched at all, so it was awesome to get to see him come in. He played pretty good."
On Kolby Harvell-Peel's defensive dominance
"He's in the right place at the right time. It's like Shaun Lewis. Remember years ago when Shaun Lewis was here? Every time the ball got tipped he was standing there and every time the ball was on the ground he was there. For some reason, he is in the right place at the right time. You know what people say about guys who are good players? They are usually in the right place at the right time. The second part of that is when he gets the chance, he catches it. He finishes and he catches it."
On Jim Knowles impact on the defense
"I've been proud of Jim. As everyone knows it is hard to play defense in this league. Defenses have rallied a little bit, as there has been better defensive play overall. You have to have thick skin. Eddie Sutton used to say that if you are going to coach you have to have thick skin. Jim has done a good job of that. We still have a long way to go, but I think our schemes and the understanding of the players is getting better each week. We are tackling good. We missed some today, but those two guys who made us miss some tackles are elusive and sometimes that is going to happen. We were running to the ball to eliminate big plays. I think that is also a big part of it. We will get better at rushing the quarterback, which is huge in this league. With three- or four-man pressure, you somehow have to be disruptive if you don't get the sack. Earlier in the year we weren't disruptive, in my opinion, now we are a little better."
Defensive Coordinator Jim Knowles
On Kolby Harvell-Peel
"He has great football intelligence. He is a guy who can pick my brain at practice. He understands offensive and defensive schemes. Defense is a lot about momentum and attitude. We have a lot of momentum right now and we've got to keep it up. Kolby is our leader for sure."
On the defense
"I thought we did great. I don't like that we gave up the two scores at the end. You never like that when you are competing. We played a lot of guys and executed the game plan really well."
Offensive Coordinator Sean Gleeson
On the offense
"As a coach, you are always a little bittersweet about a couple of things here or there. Wes scored on the opening possession. We didn't turn the ball over for the first time all year. We limited some penalties. We got some big plays from our players. On the whole, I'm pretty happy about today's performance."
On not having any turnovers
"The things that count in this sport are your resilience and your commitment to wanting to make things better. We are always trying to find ways to get better. We'd like to be a little better on third downs. We are going to keep plugging away."
Chuba Hubbard
On how three-straight wins builds the team up
"We've known all year that we have a special team. Obviously, we had some trouble early on in the season. Just getting in the groove and working up from here is good. It feels good to win, but we can't get complacent and have to keep building off this."
On the team's impressive first half
"We just try to come out fast every single game. We try to put points up on the board, and our defense tries to stop them fast so we can get back out on the field. We did a great job of having guys flying around the field. It was an early game, so we knew one of the team's was going to be sleeping and it wasn't us. It was a great win."
Kolby Harvell-Peel
On winning three-straight games
"The energy is high. You know, it just feels good. Before the season started, we thought that we were a team that could win a lot of games. During the middle of the year, it got a little rocky, but to be back on track now feels great."
On his defensive contributions
"We were just preparing all week. We just prepared all week. We had the bye week, so we had some extra preparation coming in. We just tried to come in and start as fast as possible."
Jarrick Bernard
On the energy surrounding the team
"This just keeps building our confidence week in and week out. We're steadily racking up wins, but we just know that it's not over. We still have a few games left, so we have to finish it out strong."
On the defensive mentality early in the game
"We just focused in and locked in on the game plan. We executed on everything that we were told all throughout the week leading up to today."
Johnny Wilson
On his confidence level in the team
"Winning consistently just gets everyone confident in themselves. We don't really think about anything else but winning. I think it just pushes the guys harder each week and we just want to win whatever week it is."
On the hot start to the game
"Honestly, the hot start begins in practice. We keep the throttle down in practice and we don't slow down. It just carries over because practice is our conditioning. We just kept the throttle down."
Kansas Head Coach Les Miles
On today's game
"Our intent always is to play our best game and we didn't get that done today. Back to work. I like who we are as a team. I like the people. The guys will work hard and give it all they have."
On the mood after the loss
"The guys don't like losing. Finishing second isn't any fun. I told them it's their decision who to be, but I know they will buckle down and get back to work."
On his return Stillwater
"I really like this place. These people here were kind to my family. I had two children born here. I enjoyed it and always look back and think how special this place is to my family."
On the quarterback change
"We were just looking for a spark to see if we could get something going. Carter is good, we were just trying to shift the mood some and it didn't work out."
Mike Lee
On how the loss
"It's really tough, but all we can do is go back next week and just work. Then come game time we just have to be more prepared."
On the positives of the defense
"Playing every snap our hardest, getting them off the field and making them punt the ball. That was really our goal. To stop the running and make them punt the ball."
On the small fight late in the game
"It was just all in the game. It was just in the moment type of thing. It's a game of football. It's going to get like that. It's going to get chippy, but you just can't let it get too far. You have to stop it before it gets to that level."
Carter Stanley
On being subbed out at the start of the third quarter
"Coach came up to me at the end of halftime when we were in the locker room and originally told me he was going to get the first possession of the second half to get a spark going. It ended up being like three and I kind of get it. It was tough. I was still locked in for every play. Just trying to go back in and help my team."
On how the offense played
"It's definitely concerning. I think a lot of it is on us as players. I have full faith in Coach. He calls great plays for us and I think football is the ultimate team sport. You have to get a lot of guys on the same page and doing their job. If one even messes up a little bit, your whole play can be ruined. I saw a lot of that today."
On the failed trick play
"It was tough. We had it blocked pretty well for the most part. The initial look for the design of the play was good. He went on to his second progression of the play and with trick plays like that with all commotion, it's tough to see all that stuff."
