Cowgirls win Third Straight Fall Game
October 09, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team defeated USAO 8-3 on Wednesday at Cowgirl Stadium to extend its winning streak to three games.
With stifling pitching and timely hitting, OSU completed the sweep through its first homestand of Fall Ball.
"It was an interesting game," Head Coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Their starter was solid and we knew that going in. I thought we had some good at-bats but I was disappointed with the energy of the game. We just have to keep getting better. Logan Simunek and Kelly Maxwell pitched really well."
Simunek started for OSU and kept the Drovers off the board with three solid innings, surrendering just one hit while picking up two strikeouts.
"I'm working more on my mechanics and my pitches," Simunek said. "I feel like I came out and attacked everybody."
Despite Simunek's performance in the circle to start the game, the Cowgirls couldn't provide run support for the senior and fell behind in the top of the fourth when a fielding error led to a couple of unearned runs. However, OSU batters quickly responded by leading off the bottom of the fourth with a double down the line from Hayley Busby. Freshman Macee Barnes pinch ran for Busby and came around to score on a Drover error in the infield.
After Taylor Tuck reached base via a walk and a Chelsea Alexander single in the bottom of the fifth, Sydney Pennington stayed hot by crushing a three-run home run to center field to give OSU its first lead of the game and the Cowgirls never relinquished it.
"I felt great in the box," Pennington said. "I felt relaxed and I'm just trying to get back to myself."
Following Simunek's outing, the trio of Carrie Eberle, Gabby Sprang and Maxwell tossed seven strong relief innings combined. Maxwell, a redshirt freshman, closed the game out in style by tossing two perfect innings and striking out all six batters she faced.
The Cowgirls took advantage of USAO's control issue in the circle and tacked on runs in the final three innings of the game, two in the eighth and one each in the ninth and tenth. Aside from displaying patience and discipline at the plate with five batters drew walks in the final three innings, the Cowgirls also showed their aggressiveness on the basepaths with four stolen bases.
Up next, OSU hits the road and travels to Denton to take on UNT this Saturday at 3 p.m.
