OSU defeats Tulsa 3-1 in a Pitchers’ Duel
October 04, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team beat Tulsa 3-1 in a rematch of last year's regional showdown to remain undefeated in fall ball.
It was a pitchers' duel under the lights at Cowgirl Stadium on a cool and breezy Friday night as runs between the two teams were scarce.
Kelly Maxwell, a redshirt freshman, continues her impressive showing this Fall. She started tonight's game and got the win with three scoreless innings, giving up just two hits while registering a strikeout.
"I'm just proud of the way she has bounced back and continues to work," Coach Kenny Gajewski said. "She is just a different kid. The body looks different and the mentality is really good. Good things happen to good people."
Between the 2019 Pitcher of the Year Carrie Eberle, sophomore Gabby Sprang and senior Logan Simunek, the Cowgirls' bullpen picked up right where Maxwell left off. The trio surrendered only an unearned run and two hits in seven innings of relief.
Despite a relatively quiet offensive output from OSU this game, the Cowgirls were able to string together 10 hits to outlast Tulsa in tonight's low-scoring affair.
"This game means a lot to us as it always does," Gajewski said. "There are a lot of Oklahoma kids that are fighting. I thought they pitched really well, I thought we pitched very well too. I was disappointed in our bats at different periods of time, but in the end, we did what we had to do."
Taylor Tuck opened the scoring for OSU by roping a long single off the wall in the bottom of the second to drive in Shalee Brantley who came in to pinch run earlier in the inning.
Tulsa knotted the score up in the top of the fifth with the help of a couple of misplays from Cowgirls' infielders, but OSU's offense quickly responded in the next two innings. Sydney Pennington claimed the advantage back with a hard-hit single up the middle to drive in Chelsea Alexander in the bottom of the sixth. Alexander helped create the second OSU run with her speed by stealing second after reaching on an infield single. The Cowgirls added an insurance run in the seventh after Brantley drew a bases-loaded walk.
Up next, the Cowgirls look to improve their fall record to 3-0 when University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma visits on Oct. 9.
