STILLWATER – Oklahoma State posted its sixth consecutive victory Friday night as the 13th-ranked Cowgirls topped Bedlam-rival Oklahoma, 3-1, at Neal Patterson Stadium.
With the win, OSU improved to 13-1-3 overall and 6-1-1 in Big 12 Conference play. The Cowgirls will close out the regular season Thursday when they host Baylor and will occupy the top spot in the league standings going into that match.
Claire Gantzer, Olyvia Dowell and Camy Huddleston each recorded goals against the Sooners, while Jaci Jones added two assists to bring her season total to 11, the sixth-highest single-season total in school history. Jones also has 23 career assists, which ranks fourth on OSU's all-time list.
OU (8-7-3, 3-4-1) nearly took a lead just two minutes into the match, but Cowgirl goalie Dani Greenlee made a diving save, one of her four in the game, to stop a shot from Kristina O'Donnell.
The Cowgirls would get on the scoreboard in the 31st minute. Kim Rodriguez delivered a free kick into the box that was punched away by OU goalkeeper Nikki Panas, but the ball carried to Claire Gantzer, who headed it into the back of the net for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 OSU lead.
Less than five minutes later, Jones split through a pair of OU defenders and crossed a ball into the box that was bobbled by Panas and tapped in by Dowell for her fifth goal.
OSU took the 2-0 lead into intermission, but the Sooners would get on the board first in the second half when a failed clearance by the Cowgirls' defense carried into the net for an own goal.
The Cowgirls sealed the win in the 82nd minute when Jones delivered a perfect corner kick that a streaking Huddleston headed past Panas to give the home team a 3-1 advantage. The goal was Huddleston's third of the year.
OU finished the match with a 12-8 edge in shots, while both teams had three corner kicks. The Sooners were also whistled for 18 fouls and three yellow cards.
