OSU vs. Baylor Postgame Quotes
October 19, 2019 | Cowboy Football
OSU Head Coach Mike Gundy
Overall game assessment
"We had turnovers, which cost us touchdowns and gave up three big plays. When you look at it, we held them to three of nine on third downs. We were six of 17, which is not great but not bad. Turnovers killed us in the fourth quarter. Big plays hurt our defense in the fourth quarter. We've got to get back to work. I told the players we've got to look to see what happened, come up with a plan and go from there. It's similar to what happened at Tech. When you turn the ball over in key situations and give up a touchdown on a turnover and give up big plays, it's hard for us to overcome that. They ran 54 plays. We ran 86 plays, so they big played us. Then we had four 15-yard penalties, two pass interference calls on one drive, one on third and 12, which hurt us. There is plenty of work to go around. I hated it for the guys. The crowd was awesome. Homecoming was awesome. I wish we would've played better in the fourth quarter for the fans, but we'll keep moving and get ready to come back tomorrow and get it corrected for Iowa State."
On the offensive line
"I think we played OK. That's the most difficult position for me to give you an opinion on without watching tape because I can't see them from the sideline. I thought we played OK. Those guys are playing pretty good. Nobody had really moved the ball and scored on them (Baylor) very much. I would be able to give a better assessment after I watch tape."
On the defense
"I think in this game I think it's probably 50 percent Baylor had a couple of good play calls… they caught us in a couple of coverages that were good versus what we were in, and we let ourselves down a couple of times. There were times when we were playing good. We're just not consistent over a period of time, and that's where we've got to improve. The good news is that they show signs of being able to do it. Now, that's not helping us because we play four quarters in a game. So, we have to be more consistent, and we gave up way too many big plays. Then after one of the turnovers, in my opinion, we went out and we didn't compete. They ran a counter play and broke it for 80 yards or something. We just didn't compete on that play, and that comes back to me and the leadership. No matter what, you've got to go out and compete. That made it look worse."
On Spencer Sanders
"He turned the ball over and fumbled in the pocket and gave up a touchdown… The same thing, he was doing good, too, until the fourth quarter. He had done better. I think the last one in the pocket he caused himself with his own leg. He was pretty good for quite a while, then he got back to a little bit of freelance at the end of the game. He's got to stay in the system."
On LD Brown's involvement today
"He was better today… 80 yards. He came in, broke some tackles, made some good runs for us. Chuba still had a lot of carries with 32, but he's averaging five yards per carry, which is a good thing. LD was in there a little bit more and got some good yards for us and we have to continue to do that."
On getting the ball to multiple receivers
"I thought it was better. I thought for three quarters, other than the one under throw Spencer had before half, he was pretty sound in what he was doing… his thought process, distributing the ball. Sanders did a better job distributing and got some other guys the ball.
On guys bouncing back from a loss
"One, they don't have a choice. We play next week at Iowa State, whether they like it or not. My message to them was Sunday is a hard day when you don't win a game because you've got to come in and watch the game and grade it. It's tough because these guys have a lot of pride, but it's very important to see it, correct it and put a plan in place. I don't see that as being an issue with them at all. They'll practice well and get ready to play."
Offensive Coordinator Sean Gleeson
On the fourth quarter
"It was a storm of events. I was pretty pleased [with the game up to that point] and sitting at ease calling the game up top. Our guys were executing really well. Objectively as their coach, I thought we were a better football team today than we had been at other games. You want to be in a place where people expect to win and you are not just taking home consolation prizes. We are definitely a better team. When we turned the ball over and the ball gets in the end zone, it's like the deck of cards comes crashing down. They're a good football team, so they know how to win. They are a physical football team. We are still trying to figure out how to win some of these close games. It wasn't for a lack of execution or a lack of the game plan. We were feeling pretty good about the way things were going [until the turnover]."
Defensive Coordinator Jim Knowles
On Baylor's big plays
"The second half was a letdown, in terms of stopping those big plays. That's the key to survival in the Big 12. We got to go back and get to where we were in the first half."
On the message to the team
"I'll do better. We'll do better. We just have to stick together. Tough times are for tough people. We just have to keep working. We have a great culture here. These guys will bounce back."
Amen Ogbongbemiga
What he liked that he saw from the defense
"Everybody is playing hard. I can't take away the effort part. That's something good that you always want to see in a team. It's your team playing hard every snap. There were just a few things that they made plays on that we weren't adjusted to and they made the last play. We just have to keep working."
How he feels about the team going forward
"There are a lot of positive things, but there are always things we have to work on. We can't get down on ourselves for any little thing. Everybody was playing hard, so we just have to fix the little things and improve each week."
Jelani Woods
What he felt he did well against Baylor
"I was really just trying to do whatever the team needed in the moment. I made the plays that needed to be made. There was nothing really complicated about the way I played."
How this team can improve next week
"We need to improve in the red zone. That's what we need to work on throughout the weeks. I feel like we did better with that, but other than that, I feel like we have a lot to work on."
L.D. Brown
On his big touchdown run
"It just got us going. It gave us momentum. It's a game of momentum. We saw that we would have to keep scoring based on what the defense was doing, but it just kept us going. We knew it was going to be a dog fight, so that's what we did."
His positive outlook on the offense
"We played together and played fast. That's what we work on: playing fast, physical and hungry. Obviously we're going to come out hungry next week, so we'll keep everyone level-headed. We'll be alright and just get back on track next week."
Baylor Head Coach Matt Rhule
On the win
"Tremendous win today, this is a hard place to play. It was an overall team win and I'm really proud. I thought we made a decision at halftime to stop worrying about winning when you're 6-0 that can be a yoke around your neck. Instead we said let's just go compete and play. We found things to get in rhythm on offense, scored on defense and ran the ball well at the end of the game. Hubbard is amazing. You never know how good someone is until you play them. He was hard to tackle. I thought their quarterback, Sanders, played his best game he was hard to tackle. I thought we showed heart and I was very happy with our guys effort."
On adversity on the road
"We knew the first half we had the long touchdown called back and then fumbled the ball. It wasn't like we couldn't move the ball, we just couldn't score. Credit to them they did a lot of different things against us. That's what we're learning are people are going to do a lot of different things against us. Our team was a team today that was going to go compete and I felt like they knew if they just hung in there they could make enough plays to win."
On the defensive line play
"I thought they had a really good plan. They gapped and slid a lot of stuff. First half, we gave up one play over 20 yards. I thought we settled down in the second half. I think the play of the game was the pick before the half. I think guys are grinded and playing hard. Eventually the sacks came with the fumble and other hits on the quarterback."
On people stepping up
"I thought it was the whole team. We told our whole team it would take all of you guys. Guys stepped up in the secondary and special teams. I thought everyone stepped up and it was a great team win. We talked this morning about how one man can be attacked and defeated, two men can stand back-to-back and defend and conquer, and three men are like a triple-braided rope. We wanted to be a triple-braided rope today. It wasn't perfect, but we didn't panic."
Josh Fleeks
On Moving The Ball Well
"It was amazing. The best feeling you can have is moving the ball really well."
On His Production
"Me knowing that they are doubling up on Denzel, it really opens up a lot of opportunities for other receivers. When you have your chance, you've got to take it."
On Outscoring the Cowboys 35-7 In The Second Half
"We are a fourth-quarter team, we are fighters."
JT Woods
On How The Team Responded To Having Multiple Starters Injured
"It's something that I stressed a couple months ago. The 2s have to play like 1s. When guys go down, we know we'll be prepared, it's no different. We practice like 1s in practice, so when it comes to the games, we always play like 1s.
On How They Were Able To Move Past The Fake Punt Attempt
"We laughed it off actually. We have a 'what's next?' mentality. We preach that to the team 'what's next? what's next?' Once the play happened, 'what's next?' the defense went back on the field and we just played the best game be could play."
Terrel Bernard
On Forcing Turnovers
"Coach Mcguire preaches it, he's our coach for that. He's made it a big thing. Whether it's in practice, camps, spring I think we've really taken a hold of it and it's showing up in games now."
On Coach McGuire's Turnover Celebration
"We have this thing called 'party on the numbers' whenever we get a turnover. He comes out and jumps around with us and has a good time with all of us and really celebrates it. It's a fun time."
Charlie Brewer
On How Important It was For The Offense and Defense To Feed Off Each Other In The 4th Quarter
"That was huge. It's a tough place to play, on the road, it was their homecoming, once we got in a groove, I think we just started rolling."
On Feeding Off Being The Underdog
"We saw that we were underdogs. It was definitely in the back of our heads a little bit. We got the win and that's what matters."
JaMycal Hasty
On What Helped The Team Score 35 Points In The Second Half
"At one point, I didn't even know the score, I was just out there playing. We just finally kind of clicked. We just have to keep playing hard and we're seeing the results."
On Overcoming Struggles In His Game
"It's actually fun. You get to see yourself on tape and you know what you have to do now. It's detailed, deliberate work, deliberate focus. You have to go in there and improve on things and it isn't just me, it's everybody on this team."
Overall game assessment
