MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Oklahoma State posted its first-ever win over West Virginia Thursday night as the 15th-ranked Cowgirls celebrated a 2-1 victory at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The win was the fourth in a row for OSU as it improved to 11-1-3 overall and moved into first place in the Big 12 standings with a 4-1-1 conference mark.
Kim Rodriguez and Grace Yochum recorded goals for the Cowgirls, and Dani Greenlee racked up a season-high seven saves.
Rodriguez gave the Cowgirls an early lead in the 14th minute as she took a free kick from 35-yards out near the sideline and delivered a ball that carried untouched through a crowd, off the hand of WVU goalie Rylee Foster and into the net to put OSU up 1-0. The goal was Rodriguez' third of the season.
OSU doubled its lead in the 30th minute as Yochum tallied her team-leading eighth goal of the season. After Olyvia Dowell drove the ball deep into the box, she delivered a cross that Yochum raced in and drilled top shelf to give the Cowgirls a 2-0 advantage.
Down 2-0 at the half, WVU (7-6-1, 2-3-0) pressed hard offensively after the break, outshooting the Cowgirls 8-2 in the final 45 minutes.
But Greenlee and the OSU defense rose to the occasion, with the Cowgirl keeper posting six of her seven saves in the final half.
The first two of those Greenlee saves came early after intermission to keep the Mountaineers off the scoreboard. On the first shot, she dove to her left to knock away an attempt by Alina Stahl, and on the ensuing corner kick, she smothered a header by Addison Clark as OSU's 2-0 remained intact.
The Mountaineers finally broke the shutout in the 83rd minute when Juliana Lynch found the back of the net on a deep shot to cut the OSU lead to 2-1.
Greenlee would make a pair of saves following the goal, including one of the highlight-reel variety at the 86:49 mark when she leapt and directed the ball over the crossbar.
OSU returns to action Sunday at Iowa State in a match scheduled for a noon start.
