Postgame Quotes: OSU vs. OU
January 23, 2019 | Cowboy Basketball
OSU head coach Mike Boynton
Opening Statement
"I thought we played with the right mindset [to start the game]. We took the right approach and were the aggressors. We had to be the aggressors. We knew this was a game that meant a lot to both teams. but we couldn't sustain it long enough to come out with a win tonight."
On the defense
"We started turning the ball over more, first and foremost. We stopped running as a good offense. We started to be a little bit more stagnant. We started to play against the shot clock a lot more and those shots got a little bit more pressure on them. At some point, we got to have somebody step up and take ownership on the court and really get us into something where we can get a great shot. Those turnovers and tough shots led directly to points for them."
On getting to the rim offensively
"We got to the rim quite a bit but we didn't get to the free-throw line enough. No doubt we are a three-point shooting team predominantly right now and that's where most of our offense comes from. But we got to find a way to get easier shots around the basket and get to the free-throw line."
On the message to the team
"We are not far off. We are close. I know that nobody wants to hear that but this is part of the process of learning how to win."
OSU junior guard Lindy Waters
On the team's first half
"As a team collectively we were very aggressive for the first 10-12 minutes. Sometimes we had the ball stick a little bit too much and we became stagnant."
On his aggressiveness
"I just sometimes am very unselfish. I am always trying to find my teammates and find the open man. We are down a couple players, and all of us have to step up."
OSU junior guard Curtis Jones
On his second half
"I was trying to play as hard as I can, try to defend and do what was best for the team."
What the offense could improve on
"We just have to just continue to move. We need to push the ball a little more, keep moving as a team. Trust the offense and each other."
Oklahoma head coach Lon Kruger
Opening Statement
"I'm proud of our guys. Obviously, we dug a big hole. I thought Oklahoma State and Coach Boynton did a great job to start the game. They had us on their heels and they made a lot of their shots. We contributed by not guarding as well as we need to, but I thought we got into the flow a little bit and cut the lead to a manageable number at half time, and I think our guys really battled well in the second half, but every game is tough. It's a huge win for us. I know OK State is going to keep playing hard. Coach Boynton does such a good job, and I respect them like crazy, but I'm proud of our guys tonight."
Regarding Jamal Bieniemy
"He's been fantastic. Two consecutive games he ran the show, making big shots in critical times, contested lay ups in critical times. He knocked down that big three to take it to five. He's been great. He gives us good direction, and has really good instincts defensively, too. I couldn't be happier for him and we needed him, and he stepped up and delivered."
Regarding last year's Bedlam game in Stillwater
"It didn't come up in any huddles. Anytime you have older guys, they take a little something from everything, but we didn't take anything from that specifically."
OU freshman guard Jamal Bieniemy
On OU's mindset coming into the game:Â
"It was just in practice, we practice hard. I pride myself on not turning the ball over. Coach Kruger says keep the balls in my hands, keep the ball from the other team and just play hard."
OU forward Jamuni McNeace
Regarding the defensive change
"We just went out there and fought a little harder. Coach gave us a little pep talk in the huddle. He told us we weren't playing as hard. We weren't playing like ourselves. We were just trying to get back to what we were doing before."
Regarding wearing down the Cowboys
"I felt like their guys were playing really hard, so they wore themselves down. We were throwing our defense on them and they were short-numbered, so they got tired later on."
