STILLWATER – Oklahoma State remained perfect at home this season as the 21st-ranked Cowgirls defeated California, 3-1, Friday night at Neal Patterson Stadium.
With the win, OSU improved to 5-1-0 on the season, which includes a 4-0-0 mark on their home field. The Cowgirls have allowed only two goals in four home games this season.
Leading the attack for OSU against the Golden Bears (3-3-0) were Jaci Jones, who scored her second goal of the season, and Marlo Zoller, who buried her team-leading third of the year.
Despite being outshot 13-11, OSU capitalized on its attempts, and the Cowgirls were highly efficient, putting 64 percent of their shots on goal (7-for-11).
Jones got the scoring started in the 20th minute. Kim Rodriguez sent a corner kick into the box that Cal failed to clear and after Jones' initial shot was deflected, she regained possession and sent the ball into the back of the net to put OSU up 1-0.
The second goal of the night came from a misplayed ball by Cal goalkeeper Amanda Zodikoff. In the 34th minute, Elise Hawn sent a free kick from near midfield toward the goal that Zodikoff tried to punch away, but the ball carried backward into the net for an own goal that put the Cowgirls up 2-0.
Zoller capped off the Cowgirls scoring just six minutes into the second half as she lofted a shot from outside the box over the keeper's head to the far post.
Hannah Warner and Dani Greenlee split time in goal for the Cowgirls, combining for four saves. Warner accounted for three of those, including a nice diving save in the 25th minute.
Cal got its lone score in the 84th minute as Kayla Fong's shot went to the far post after a nice assist from Jordyn Elliott. It was Fong's third goal of the year.
Up next, the Cowgirls conclude the weekend with a Sunday match against San Francisco. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Patterson Stadium.
