STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State football team enters its second week of play, and looming on the Cowboys' schedule is a clash with a gritty South Alabama side that is coming off a tough 30-26 loss to Louisiana Tech.
The Cowboys and Jaguars met a year ago in Mobile, Alabama, with OSU coming out on top, 44-7, that day, but the 2018 meeting will present the Pokes with some intriguing challenges. Much of the test that awaits the Cowboys this weekend is dealing with a USA squad that is in its first season under head coach Steve Campbell.
During the opening week of the season, Campbell's squad rushed the ball 43 times to only 23 attempts through the air. Junior Tra Minter was the workhorse in the backfield, as he carried the rock 16 times and caught three passes against Louisiana Tech. Senior quarterback Evan Orth and sophomore wideout Kawaan Baker were the home-run hitters, though, as they combined to rush for 125 yards on eight carries, with Baker finding the endzone twice on the ground.
On the defensive side of the ball, senior safety Nigel Lawrence was the Jaguars' most frequent tackler in week one, as he racked up 12 total tackles, five of which were solo stops. Lawrence was the anchor on the back end of a defense that created plenty of pressure in the backfield, as USA notched six tackles for loss and registered three sacks on opening weekend.
Saturday's matchup in Stillwater figures to be another test for coach Mike Gundy and the Cowboys. Kickoff at Boone Pickens Stadium is set for 7 p.m. on FSN.
