Cowboys Discuss South Alabama Matchup
September 04, 2018 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Select Oklahoma State football players met with media Tuesday to discuss the team's impending matchup with South Alabama this Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium. Some of their comments:
Running Back Justice Hill
On the team's feeling heading into South Alabama:
"I feel good. Prepared like we usually do."
On what he learned last week:
"Prepare the same each week. Watch film and work hard in the weight room. And in practice give it my all."
On his mindset:
"I just want to do whatever it takes to win, so it doesn't matter how many touches I get. I'll just take advantage of each one of them."
Running Back Chuba Hubbard
On the first game:
"It was a great day. It was fun being my first game. I'm focused on South Alabama now, bringing things that I can and helping get the win with my teammates."
On sitting out last year:
"It was definitely a long year, but I knew if I took advantage of it and worked hard that this year would an amazing year. I wanted to play, that was my goal. But you know, not everything goes to plan. You just got to live with it and keep working hard."
On how last year helped him:
"It definitely (helped me). I got a lot stronger and I really needed that. I put on a lot of weight. I was able to be at the games, watch everything and get in-game experience."
Quarterback Taylor Cornelius
On his first career start:
"It wasn't perfect by any means. It's something to improve on, something to look at on tape and move forward."
On his running backs:
"It's a big relief when you can just dump the ball down or hand it off and they can run for 60 yards or 90-something yards for a touchdown."
On learning from the Missouri State film:
"I learned a lot from it. I need to work on placing the ball. I just have to go throw it and let it rip."
On the difference of having his own film to watch as a starter:
"Yeah, after four years of watching Mason (on film) every Sunday, it's a little different. I enjoyed it. I learned a lot. There's a lot to improve on, there's no doubt about that."
Wide Recevier Jalen McCleskey
On being a leader:
"James Washington, Marcell Ateman, Chris Lacy, they were all great leaders. So I just try to take some stuff that I learned from them and watching them and just help out the younger guys."
On Taylor Cornelius' play last game:
"I thought Cornelius played pretty good. First time out there being the starter, I felt like he distributed the ball, he went through his reads, he got the ball out quick when he needed to. I just felt like he made plays."
On being a safety net for the quarterback:
"I think everybody is. Dillon Stoner does a great job of catching the ball. We had zero drops last game. I felt like all the receivers do a great job of giving Cornelius confidence that he can throw us the ball and make a play."
Offensive Lineman Larry Williams
On how this year's line compares to previous:
"I think it's one of the best O-lines I've ever played for. Not even just football, but as far as attitude, character and personalities."
On blocking for good running backs:
"It makes my job easy. As long as you do your job well, we have good enough running backs to make a guy miss or make you look good even though you messed up. It gives you a lot of confidence.
Defensive End Jordan Brailford
On the defense last game:
"We feel like we had some mistakes that we needed to correct. More of being out of position and things that we can improve on mentally with more reps. I think we will get better as time goes on."
On not underestimating South Alabama:
"We always try to prepare for every opponent the same. No matter who we play, we always practice hard. Tuesday is always the hardest practice. We had a good one today. We always take preparation the same no matter who the opponent is. We had high energy today, actually we had a lot more energy than we did last week."
On the running backs:
"We've seen them for the past two years. They have been making plays ever since they got here. We have so much depth at the running back position and wide receivers as well. Even the scout team will score on us every once in a while to make us better and to get us ready for our opponent."
Cornerback A.J. Green
On being a mentor to the other defensive backs:
"It's fun looking at their different views and seeing where they come from. I was on the same road listening to Ramon (Richards) and Ashton Lampkin.
On South Alabama's rush-heavy offense:
"They look like a pretty good team on film. They have some good kids out there. We have a plan ready for them. We know they want to run the ball, we know they want to hit deep shots down field. We just got to stay smart and play with confidence.
