September 28, 2018 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State football team plays its first road game of the 2018 season Saturday, playing at Kansas at 11 a.m. A look at some of the streaks and trends heading into the game:
Talking Points vs. Kansas – Offense
• Doak Walker candidate Justice Hill is staking his claim as one of the nation's best running backs this season, ranking No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 4 nationally at 8.43 yards per carry on the season. That sits atop the OSU single season record list for the moment, just above Barry Sanders' 7.64 yards per carry in 1988. Hill also leads the league with 388 rushing yards on the season and his career average of 99.9 yards per game is fourth in OSU history for now.
• Hill also has the chance to write his name further into the record books this week. If he can score a rushing touchdown against Kansas, then Hill will tie the Big 12 record at 11 straight games with a rushing touchdown. He also needs just 3 rushing yards against Kansas to become the ninth player in Oklahoma State history to record 3,000 career rushing yards.
• Sophomore receiver Tylan Wallace leads the team and ranks No. 6 in FBS with 110.5 receiving yards per game. He has also written his name into OSU history already, as he became just the third underclassman in school history to record three straight 100-yard receiving games. He put up 123 yards against Texas Tech last week, 105 against Boise State and had a career-best 166 yards against South Alabama in week two.
• Senior quarterback Taylor Cornelius is in the starting role for the first time in his career and has led the Cowboys to a 3-1 start. He was an integral part of OSU's win over No. 17 Boise State, passing for 243 yards a touchdown with no interceptions, and also added 41 rushing yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns. Through four games, he has 1,229 passing yards and eight passing touchdowns on 83-for-139 passing. He's among the top 15 nationally in passing yards and total offense, and ranks No. 17 in passing yards per completion.
Talking Points vs. Kansas – Defense
• The most impressive aspect of the Cowboy defense this season is its ability to get to the quarterback. Through four games, OSU has totaled 19 sacks to lead the nation. That's three more than Alabama and Clemson this season. Those two are tied for second place. OSU also has the national lead when it comes to average sacks per game at 4.75 per contest, while the next best sits at 4.0 per game. Defensive end Jordan Brailford has led the charge, as his 4.0 sacks lead the league and rank No. 15 in FBS.
• The Cowboys also rank No. 5 in FBS in team tackles for loss per game. While sacks contribute to the tackles for loss totals, the OSU has an additional 19 tackles for loss outside of the sacks to bring season total to 38. That total is the most in the Big 12 by five and gives the team an average of 9.5 tackles for loss per game. If the rest of the season continues at that pace, the 2018 OSU defense will set school records for both team sacks and team tackles for loss.
• Pressure up front has also helped the Cowboys perform well in the run game, as OSU leads the Big 12 and ranks among the top 25 nationally allowing just 111.5 yards per game on the ground.
• True freshman safety Jarrick Bernard is emerging as a playmaker. In OSU's win over Boise State, he blocked a punt in the third quarter that was returned for a touchdown and also had a sack and forced fumble in the second quarter. He followed that up last week with a career-high 14 tackles to lead all players in the game, also grabbing his first career interception to end a a streak of 151 attempts without a pick for TTU quarterback Alan Bowman.
• OSU linebackers have also thrived in OSU's new 4-2-5 scheme. Calvin Bundage leads the team in tackles with 30 on the year and Justin Phillips is next on the list with 24. They are also among the team leaders in tackles for loss with 10.5 between them.
