Fix to Wrestle for Back-to-Back World Titles
September 20, 2018 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER— Cowboy wrestler Daton Fix will take the mat in Trnava, Slovakia beginning tomorrow morning as he looks to capture his second-consecutive freestyle World gold with the USA Junior Team.
Fix captured the title a little over a year ago at 55kg and helped lead Team USA to its first championship since 1984. He outscored his five opponents with a combined score of 53-1, with the lone point coming on a step out in the final match.
The Cowboy earned his third-straight World Team bid in Fargo, N.D. at the U.S. Marines Junior Nationals when he defeated Brandon Courtney, 2-0, in a best-of-three wrestle-off. Fix fell to Senior World Team member Thomas Gilman after storming through World Team Trials, narrowly missing a spot on the Senior team.
It's Fix's third-straight World Team appearance, but he will be wrestling at 57kg this time around. He has captured three World medals and is set to compete in his fifth age group at the World Championships.
The bracket was announced today, and he faces Ahmet Tas of Turkey in his first match of the weekend. The field for Worlds is made up of 245 wrestlers from 40 countries. Competition begins Friday morning at 3:30 a.m. CST. Fans can watch live on Trackwrestling.com and follow along with @CowboyWrestling on Twitter.
