Oklahoma State Postgame Quotes vs. Boise State – Sept. 15, 2018
September 15, 2018 | Cowboy Football
OSU Head Coach Mike Gundy
Opening Statement:
"It was a really good effort by our defense—gave up one yard per carry against a team that's had tremendous success running the football. Special teams obviously was the difference. I thought that Taylor Cornelius played really well. Made a lot of plays. I thought he was very effective running the football. Really good defensive effort. Seven sacks, one yard per rush and other than the first score we gave up, (A.J. Green) was in really good coverage one time and got lazy—didn't think there was a chance their guy could make a play and he made a great one-handed catch. So we gave up a score there, but other than that we were really good. We were able to rush. Like I said on Monday we need to be 4.5 yards a carry running the football in order to be successful and we were 4.7, so we were able to rush the ball a little bit, throw it around, and getting ready to get on to the next one.
On Taylor Cornelius
"I think he's comfortable when he's running the ball when he gets into the flow of the game. Like a three-point shooter in basketball—hits a couple threes, gets hot and you give it to him and he starts hitting a few more. He's played three games now, he's getting a little better each game."
On being an underdog
"I think our team thought they were going to win the game. I have a lot of respect for (Boise State) and as I said earlier in the week, I think in all three phases and in a program in general they could very well be as well coached team in the country in my opinion. That's why I thought this was such a good series because you're matching coaching against really good football coaches. And when the game is over I will say that again from the standpoint of, their players played the game the right way. They didn't talk trash, they come out on your sideline, they go back on the field. It's a first-class organization and you can tell why they win games because they play the game for the right reasons and we're trying to move forward with our guys in doing that, and I thought they played the same way today. It was a really clean game. There wasn't any jawing, there wasn't trash talk, any late hits. So it was a fun game to watch."
On special teams play
"Sometimes during the week you watch things and you feel like that's going to work, and then sometime you're like "I'm not real fired up about that." And I felt really good about it all week and we didn't do it well on Tuesday, but we got it corrected in the meeting. And when we did it again Thursday, the players understood it, they made the adjustments, angles were really good, their alignments were really good, and they hit the creases and came off the edge really good, and that's the key with blocking punts—everybody's got to be in the right spot. It was a big day for (Amen Ogbongbemiga) and also for (Jarrick Bernard), a true freshman. To block a punt like that is pretty cool."
On the running game
"I thought it was below average in the first half, and then I thought they were above average in the second half. (Boise State) had a good scheme for us on a couple things we were doing running the ball and I didn't like what our answer was. So at halftime we made an adjustment. They answered back and then at the end of the third quarter, our guys answered back again and came up with a nice little scheme there that allowed us to rush the football."
Offensive Coordinator Mike Yurcich
On Taylor Cornelius' performance
"The biggest thing today was that he was just gutsy. Taking care of the football, went down the field when necessary. There is always going to be something to improve upon, but we'll continue to coach him hard."
On keeping Justice (Hill) healthy
"I'm happy that he's healthy. All those backs are very talented guys, and to see those guys go into those games and every guy come out of it healthy is the main key."
Defensive Coordinator Jim Knowles
On working with Jordan Brailford
"You got a guy that's big, strong, athletic and can run. He looks like a grown man and plays with the agility of a linebacker."
On OSU's seven sacks
"Seven sacks is a bold picture, it's a big dream. I knew we'd have some tools in our chest to play aggressive and create havoc."
Quarterback Taylor Cornelius
On the Cowboys' win over Boise State
"The defense stepped up huge and made a lot of big-time plays. And then our special teams getting two blocked punts is always huge for our team."
On the offense's performance
"All credit goes to the offensive line. Our receivers and running backs did a great job today too, and all of the credit goes to them."
On how the Cowboy defense helped the offense today:
"The defense was great all day today. They even got a turnover there at the end. They held them on that first drive and then getting that missed field goal was huge for getting our momentum going. Our defense played unbelievable today."
Wide Receiver Tyron Johnson
On the offense's performance against Boise State
"We had a great week of preparation to face a great defense. (Taylor Cornelius) made a lot of throws and Justice Hill opened up the running game."
On his 35-yard reception
"It was just one of those 50-50 balls that we work on a lot. It was just a play that I had to make because it was third down."
On the offense's depth
"It's important because of the tempo we run. If someone needs a blow, we've got guys that can come in and the talent doesn't really drop off. Especially in the backfield - you've got Justice (Hill), Chuba (Hubbard), J.D. (King) and all those guys. And then in the receiving corps, I think we've got great depth. Anybody can make a play at any time."
Defensive End Jordan Brailford
On the defensive line's ability to create pressure
"It's important for us to be able to create that pressure to try and keep momentum on our side. We had a great performance tonight, but we have to come in tomorrow and continue to work to try and keep it going."
On the intensity of the defense growing each week
"It feels really good. Our guys practice hard every day. There's a culture here and we don't take any days off. We pride ourselves on going hard all the time, and that shows on gameday."
On any added confidence after beating Boise State
"It adds a little bit, but at the same time we have to look at each week the same way and prepare the same way. No matter who we're facing, we're going to work our tails off and continue to play fast."
Linebacker Justin Phillips
On the defensive performance vs. Boise State
"It all started with our preparation throughout the week and Coach Knowles implemented a pretty good gameplan. Everybody was bought in and we went out and were able to execute."
On the defense continuing to pressure opposing quarterbacks
"Our defensive line balled out today. They were able to get pressure on every down. That makes it a lot easier for our corners to cover and our other guys to make plays on the back end when they can get after the quarterback that fast."
On added confidence heading into Texas Tech next week
"There's always confidence when you get a win, but we're going to take it game-by-game and working to improve each and every week."
Boise St. Head Coach Bryan Harsin
Opening statement
"We're obviously disappointed in a loss. Give credit to Oklahoma State. They played well. They played like we've seen on tape. They played fast, they played physical and they made plays."
"I thought overall we did some things better in the first two games, obviously. We did not come out here and play the way I think we are capable of."
"On Sunday, let's look at what we did. Let's truly look at how we got beat. We got beat on some plays and we got beat in this game. So, that's hard to do. You have to drop the ego and say: 'How did I get beat?', 'Why did I get beat?' and 'How do I get better?'."
"I'm excited to get back to work because I want to see it. I want to see how we accept this challenge and utilize this bye week and get ready to play in conference against a really good team in Wyoming."
On OSU defensive line
"More pressure, more speed. I thought for the most part we protected decent, because the pocket seemed to build itself how we wanted it to. But what we didn't do is run the ball. We were giving up too much penetration. You saw where we handed the ball off and there was a guy three or four yards deep in the backfield. That can't happen."
Quarterback Brett Rypien
On the team's preparation for conference play
"We're going to come in tomorrow, watch film. We prepare just how we would if we had won this game. There will be more of a chip on our shoulder because we just got our butts whooped. We'll come in tomorrow, learn from the loss and get tougher from it."
On facing the pressure from the Cowboy defense
"They did a good job of bringing pressure. Their D-Line is good. I thought our O-Line did a good job for the most part. There were a lot of plays that I should have gotten rid of the ball quicker."
On heading into the bye
"It's tough after a loss. It's hard. Injuries happen, things happen. One of our biggest goals was to not lose a game, but one game doesn't end our season."
Wide Receiver A.J. Richardson
On the result of the game
"I think a loss is always tough, but a loss is always how you respond. We came in their house and things didn't go our way. Credit to them, that's a good football team. They're fast and they executed."
On his highlight catch
"I just go out there and try to make plays. We tell (Quarterback) Brett (Rypien) to just put it out there for us. Him giving us a chance is all we can ask for."
On the team's goals moving forward
"Our goals are definitely still able to be achieved. It was a big game and stuff like that, but it already happened and it didn't go our way. So we just need to put it to bed and we still have many things we still need to get done."
EDGE Jabril Frazier
On dealing with Taylor Cornelius running the ball
"We weren't planning for him to run the ball like that. We have to get better at tackling and making changes on the sideline."
On the loss and going into their bye week
"A loss is always bad for us. We really don't like losing, but we're going to get back to work. We've got a bye week this week and we're going to get back, watch film, get in the weight room and prepare for the next game."
