Gundy Backs His Receiving Corps
August 05, 2018 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Just a day removed from fan appreciation day, the Oklahoma State football team practiced in shoulder pads and shorts Sunday in the Sherman Smith Center.
Among the recurring storylines of fall camp is the receiving corps and if that group can sustain the loss of Biletnikoff Award winner James Washington, Marcell Ateman and Chris Lacy to the NFL.
Head coach Mike Gundy acknowledged that last year's group of receivers was special, but just because important players from 2017 are gone, that doesn't mean this year's group won't also enjoy success.
"(Observers) are kind of seeing (this year's group) as what's left," Gundy said. "I have a lot of confidence in Jalen McCleskey, Dillon Stoner and Tyron Johnson. I think those guys can make plays."
During Gundy's tenure as head coach at Oklahoma State, he has coached three Biletnikoff Award winners – Washington in 2017 and Justin Blackmon in both 2010 and 2011. In addition, Dez Bryant was a Biletnikoff Award finalist in 2008, so the question may not be can OSU replace talent at receiver, rather it may actually be who is next?
The Cowboys have an off day Monday before returning to practice Tuesday. The season opens when OSU hosts Missouri State at 7 p.m. on Thursday August 30 in Boone Pickens Stadium.
