What the Media Are Saying: Missouri State
August 30, 2018 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State football team opens the 2018 season tonight at Boone Pickens Stadium against a scrappy Missouri State squad. OSU is entering a new era of sorts this season after the departures of prominent figures such as quarterback Mason Rudolph and his top two wide receivers, James Washington and Marcell Ateman.
Those departures, and the new faces that will fill those positions, have been at the center of local and national media's coverage of the Cowboys in the weeks leading up to tonight's opener. A look at what some members of the media have been saying in run up to the Cowboys' clash with MSU:
The Tulsa World's Mark Cooper tackled what was perhaps the offseason's biggest storyline - who would be the one to fill in for the departed Rudolph at quarterback. Throughout the spring and summer, coach Mike Gundy and Co. backed Taylor Cornelius, and Thursday night the redshirt senior will get his first crack as the Cowboys' starting quarterback.
Cooper's profile tackled all aspects of Cornelius' journey from small-town Bushland, Texas, to walking on to play football at Oklahoma State before eventually earning a scholarship, and now placing himself at the top of the depth chart in his ninth semester on campus.
The Oklahoman's Scott Wright has also spent time talking with prominent Cowboy figures this offseason, centering his coverage on the biggest name returning to the field for Oklahoma State in 2018 - running back Justice Hill.
It was fitting that Wright zoned in on Hill, because, as his headline reads: "Hill will have defense's eyes on him all season."
Wright also examined the new look that the Cowboys will have on defense this season with new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles now in charge of the playcalling on that side of the ball. Knowles has quickly engrained himself within the 'Cowboy Culture' and the team's defenders have had nothing but praise for their new coach.
"He's very passionate," senior defensive tackle Darrion Daniels said to Wright. "He doesn't get frustrated like a coach. He gets frustrated like a player. If the scout team scores on us he gets as upset as if he were on the team and had gotten scored on."
Thursday's season opener at Boone Pickens Stadium has been called the beginning of a new era for Cowboy football, but in many ways, things still remain the same. The 'Sea of Orange' will be in full swell, engulfing the Cowboys' opponents with a raucous environment that is rivaled by very few others across the country, and all will seem right in Stillwater once again.
The coverage of this year's crop of Cowboys has been constant throughout the months of workouts and practice, but tonight the season finally begins and it all becomes about what happens on the field. Kick off at Boone Pickens Stadium is set for 7 p.m. on Fox Sports 1.
