Hovland Drops Hammer In U.S. Amateur Semifinal

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland notched a 3-and-2 victory over Cole Hammer on Saturday during their semifinal match at the U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Over the course of the 16 holes played during their match, Hovland tallied eight birdies, including six over the final seven holes to advance to tomorrow's championship match.
After halving the first hole, Hovland took the second with a bogey and the third with his first birdie of the day. Hammer drew even with wins at the fifth and sixth before OSU's rising junior used a birdie at the seventh to move back in front.
Hammer's birdie at the ninth squared the match with the duo headed to the inward nine.
Hovland birdied the 10th before Hammer countered with a birdie of his own at the 11th. Both players birdied the 12th before Hovland moved back in front with birdie No. 5 on the day at the 13th.
Both players birdied the 14th before Hovland closed out the match with birdies at Nos. 15 and 16.
Tomorrow's 36-hole final will get underway at 9:30 a.m. (CST) with Hovland facing Devon Bling at the historic venue.
Hovland will look to join Peter Uihlein (2010), Labron Harris, Jr. (1962), Bob Dickson (1967) and Scott Verplank (1984) as Cowboys to have hoisted the Havemeyer Trophy.
