PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland continued his impressive play on Friday at the U.S. Amateur Championship, cruising to a 7-and-6 victory over Austin Squires to advance to the semifinal round at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Hovland, who has won 15 of the 24 holes in which he has played over his last two matches, tied the tournament's record for largest margin of victory in a quarterfinal.
The rising junior halved the first hole before reeling off victories on seven consecutive holes behind four birdies and three pars. Squires posted a birdie at the 10th for his lone win of the day before Hovland took the 11th with a birdie and closed out the match with a par at the 12th.
Hovland will take on Cole Hammer tomorrow at the historic venue and will be looking to become the first Cowboy to reach the championship match since Peter Uihlein in 2010, who won at Chambers Bay making him the fourth player in program history to win the event.
