Oklahoma State Track and Field Awarded For Academic Prowess
July 26, 2018 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
The Oklahoma State men's and women's track and field teams were honored on Thursday by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for their academic success during the 2018 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
Â
The Cowboys had six All-Academic honorees and the Cowgirls garnered 10 awards. Both the men's and women's teams were also honored as All-Academic teams.
Â
Kwame Doninyah, Tanner Green, Christian Liddell, Luis Martinez, Kevin Mulcaire and Blake Scott earned All-Academic honors for the Cowboys. Jennifer Celis, Amira Coleman, Kaylee Dodd, Emily Rogers, Ambra Wesley and Schuyler Wood-Hilderbrandt represent the Cowgirls as All-Academic individuals.
Â
In order to qualify as an individual, an athlete must have earned a 3.25 GPA or higher, and ranked in the top 96 in an indoor event or on a top-48 indoor relay team or competed at an outdoor regional.Â
Â
For a team to qualify for All-Academic honors, the team must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher and be competitive at the national meets.
Â
Scott added to his already impressive 2018 campaign, in which he earned second-team All-American honors in the outdoor pole vault. He was also an All-Big 12 performer in the outdoor pole vault.
Â
Martinez again was awarded for his academic achievements. For his work in the classroom and on the cross country course, Martinez was the Big 12's Male Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year in both 2016 and 2017. He was also honored as a member of the All-Academic Cross Country team in February.Â
Â
All-Americans Sinclaire Johnson and Molly Sughroue and Google Cloud Academic All-Americans Stephanie Ferrante and Ariane Ballner joined their fellow Cowgirls as honorees.
Â
Ferrante and Ballner both earned a 4.00 GPA to cement their spot as All-Academic individuals. Ballner is the current Big 12 champion in the 1,500 meters and Ferrante was an OSU Senior of Significance and a Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship recipient.
Â
Johnson and Sughroue both had impressive outdoor seasons, as both were second-team All-Americans in the 1,500 meters.
Â
The academic honors haven't stopped for OSU, as 13 of OSU's 16 members of the All-Academic teams were honored in May as members of the Academic All-Big 12 team.
Â
Coach Dave Smith is no stranger to seeing his teams as All-Academic track and field teams. With Smith as the head man, the Cowboys have been honored as an All-Academic team nine times, and have missed the mark only once.Â
Â
The Cowgirls have also shown continuous academic success under Smith. In each year under his guidance, the OSU women's track and field team has been honored as an All-Academic team.
