STILLWATER – Oklahoma State football standouts Justice Hill and Justin Phillips were included on watch lists for national awards Monday, as Hill was one of 85 players named to the Maxwell Award list and Phillips was one of 85 players on the list for the Chuck Bednarik Award.
Hill was also one of just 33 running backs on the list for the Maxwell, given annually to "America's College Player of the Year" since 1937, while Phillips was one of 35 linebackers at the list for the Bednarik Award, given annually to the "College Defensive Player of the Year" since 1995.
A junior out of Tulsa, Hill enters the season ranked seventh among active players and first among juniors who play in Power Five conferences with 2,609 career rushing yards. His 14 career 100-yard rushing games ties for third among all active FBS players returning in 2018 and is second among running backs from the Power Five conferences. Hill was one of 11 national semifinalists for the 2017 Doak Walker Award and led the Big 12 by a wide margin last season with 1,467 rushing yards.
Phillips is a senior from Pearland, Texas and firmly established as a leader of the defense. He was honored last season by the OSU coaching staff with the Leslie O'Neal Award presented to the team's outstanding defensive player. After starting every game at linebacker, he finished as OSU's third-leading tackler with 64 tackles and had 9.5 tackles for loss. His highlights from last season included pick-sixes in back-to-back games, with one going for 25 yards in OSU's win at South Alabama and another going for 10 yards in OSU's win at Pitt.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced Oct. 29, 2018, while three finalists for each award will be unveiled Nov. 19, 2018. The winners will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards show held on Dec. 6, 2018, and the formal presentations will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala at Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 8, 2019.
The Cowboys open the 2018 season Thursday, Aug. 30, when they host Missouri State at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater with kickoff set for 7 p.m. on FS1.
