Fix Falls Short to Gilman at Final X
June 09, 2018 | Cowboy Wrestling
LINCOLN, Neb. – Oklahoma State wrestling freshman Daton Fix came up short in the final stage of World Team qualifying Saturday night, dropping a couple of tightly-contested matches to reigning World silver medalist Thomas Gilman at Final X.
Â
The loss wraps up an impressive run for the young Cowboy, who blazed through the World Team Trials last month to advance to Final X and set up the meeting with Gilman for the 57kg spot. Fix went 5-0 at the challenge tournament, outscoring his opponents, 47-8 and dominating two-time World Team member Tony Ramos in the best-of-three finals.
Â
Matched up with Gilman, the 20-year-old Fix was unable to light up the scoreboard as he has in previous tournaments, but still hung close with the former Iowa Hawkeye.
Â
Fix led, 3-2, at the midway point of the foes' first match, but a late takedown on a counter from Gilman would seal the first match by a 6-3 score. Fix was even more aggressive in the second match, nearly scoring on a handful of good shots, but Gilman survived a near buzzer-beating score from the Cowboy freshman to take the match, 2-1.
Â
After sitting out his true freshman year, Fix will be a redshirt freshman at Oklahoma State for the 2018-19 season.
