June 08, 2018 | Cowboy Wrestling
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Oklahoma State wrestling freshman Bear Hughes will represent the United States at 87kg at the Junior Greco-Roman World Championships this fall after sweeping the Junior World Team Trials finals on Friday afternoon.
Â
The Junior World Championships are set for Sept. 17-23 in Trnava, Slovakia.
Â
Automatically advancing to the finals after his U.S. Open title last month, Hughes dominated Michigan State's Cameron Caffey in the decisive best-of-three series to clinch his spot.
Â
In the first match, Hughes built up a quick, 8-0 lead in the opening minute before pinning Caffey in 1:02. Hughes would control the second match as well, defeating the Spartan by way of a 9-0 tech fall in 3:55.
Â
This marks the second consecutive year that the Cowboys will have a wrestler at Junior Worlds, after freshman Daton Fix completed a run to a gold medal at 55kg last August.
Â
Cowboy freshman Austin Harris also competed in the Junior Greco-Roman World Team Trials finals on Friday, but was defeated in two matches by Chad Porter.
