STILLWATER – Oklahoma State student-athletes Britton Abbott and Stephanie Ferrante have been selected to receive 2017-18 Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships, the Big 12 Conference office announced Thursday.
Abbott, a senior on the football team, and Ferrante, a senior on the cross country/track and field team, were also recognized as the male and female recipients of the OSU Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in April.
A second-team selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team and a first-team Academic All-Big 12 honoree this past season, Abbott has also received the Big 12 Conference's Gerald Lage Award, which is presented to student-athletes who have earned 100 credit hours with a minimum 3.80 cumulative grade point average. The owner of a perfect 4.0 grade point average since stepping on campus, Abbott graduated Summa Cum Laude in December (3.9-4.0 GPA) and was the recipient of the football program's Dr. L.L. Boger Award for academic achievement.
On the field, Abbott started 10 games at Cowboy Back last season and was an important factor in OSU ranking among the national leaders in numerous offensive categories in 2017. He has been on the field for the Cowboys since his freshman season and played in every game but one since the beginning of his sophomore year.
Ferrante is also a 4.0 student who earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors and the Gerald Lage Award this year. She was one of only 48 students campus-wide to be recognized as a Senior of Significance by the OSU Alumni Association and served as president of OSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Additionally, she is a two-time selection to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team and a three-time first team Academic All-Big 12 Team selection. Ferrante earned her diploma in May with a double major in biochemistry and microbiology/cell and molecular biology.
In competition, Ferrante has earned seven All-Big 12 honors in her career, including all-conference recognition in the 2018 indoor 800 meters. She has a pair of conference titles to her credit, which she earned running as part of the distance medley relay team in 2015 and 2017, and was part of the school-record setting 4x400-meter relay team at the 2018 Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
Abbott and Ferrante have also been involved with several community service programs and other volunteer opportunities during their time at OSU.
Named in honor of the late Dr. Prentice Gautt, a former Big 12 staff member and student services' pioneer, the Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship awards $10,000 to each honoree. Criteria for the award includes a cumulative GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, participation in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at the nominee's respective institution and completion of athletics' eligibility. The student-athletes also must graduate from their respective member institutions within 15 months of their selection for a postgraduate scholarship and are expected to enroll in graduate/professional schools within two years of graduation.
