SACRAMENTO Calif. — Oklahoma State track and field's Sinclaire Johnson and Molly Sughroue booked their spots in the NCAA Championships on the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds.
Both Johnson and Sughroue advanced to the meet in Eugene, Oregon, within the same heat, a packed 1,500-meter quarterfinal that resulted in both Cowgirls earning PR's.
Johnson's time of 4:11.57 slots her in the top-10 in the NCAA this season, while also setting the No. 2 time in school history. With the massive 9-second PR, this will be the sophomore standout's first opportunity to earn All-America status.
Sughroue looks to continue adding to an impressive career with the Cowgirls, as she's hunting her third All-America honor after earning her second in the 2018 indoor mile. Her time of 4:14.32 also set a solid personal best for the Cowgirl middle-distance star.
Ariane Ballner and Jenny Celis also competed in the heated race, narrowly missing out on earning the trip to Eugene, finishing 15th and 19th, respectively.
Three Cowboys took part in a close 5,000 meters two hours later, with freshman Isai Rodriguez running the fastest of the OSU times.
Rodriguez continued his freshman phenom status with a 13:53.73 PR in the race. The freshman was merely a second off punching his ticket in his first season with the Cowboys. Ashenafi Hatte and Kevin Mulcaire would be close behind in 14:03.01 and 14:21.82, respectively.
The men's 4x400 would be the second to last event of the meet, with the Cowboys running in the first heat. The quartet of Kwame Donyinah, Brandon Singleton, Tanner Green and Tyler Jackson ran its second-fastest time of 2018, crossing the line in 3:08.88.
In the final event of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, the women's 4x400-relay squad of Nicolette Dixon, Stephanie Ferrante, Ambra Wesley and Amira Coleman went 3:39.59 for its second-fastest time of 2018.
Overall, OSU qualified four athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon. The qualifiers will get a week off to recuperate, with the meet set to take place on June 6-9.
