OSU Track and Field Earns Four Conference Honors on First Day in Waco

Day One Results
WACO, Texas — Oklahoma State track and field's Luis Martinez, Sylvester Barus, Gintare Zenkeviciute and Michaela Vasey earned All-Big 12 nods on the first day of the Big 12 Championships at Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium.
After just the first day of competition, the Cowboys sit in fourth with 13 points and the Cowgirls are in seventh with seven.
Vasey earned the first points of the competition for Dave Smith's squads in the women's javelin. She bested her personal record thrice in the series, finishing with a mark of 42.42m/139-2.25 and the No. 5 mark in OSU history.
For her efforts, she earned a sixth-place finish and three team points, with this being her first time scoring in an OSU uniform.
"She competed as well as I've seen her," throws coach Josh Langley said. "Her first two throws weren't good, but she stayed composed and pulled off a PR throw to get into the finals. From there, she just kept climbing and fighting."
Zenkeviciute was the second Cowgirl to score on day one with her fifth overall placing in the 10,000 meters. She out-kicked Brooke Gilmore of Baylor to earn the Cowgirls another four points.
It was the senior's first All-Big 12 honor since coming to OSU.
The Cowboys got their scoring from the final race of the day, the men's 10,000 meters. It came down to a fierce 50-meter kick between Martinez and Iowa State's Edwin Kurgat. Martinez finished three-tenths of a second behind to take second and earn his third All-Big 12 honor.
Barus wasn't far behind, placing fourth in 31:06.67 and earning five points. This marked the distance standout's fourth all-conference nod after earning three across the 2017 indoor and outdoor seasons.
The multi-events kicked off the meet for the Pokes, with Cole Verble and Mace Metcalf in the decathlon for the Cowboys, while Megan Mann was the lone Cowgirl in the heptathlon.
Verble and Metcalf sit just outside of scoring for the Cowboys, with Verble in ninth after day one, earning 3,248 points in the five events of the first day. Metcalf will also look to improve his current standing of 10th following the first day.
The Big 12 Outdoor Championships will resume tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT with the decathlon 110-meter hurdles. The first individual event for the Cowboys will be the shot put at 4 p.m. CT, while the Cowgirls kick off individual events at 3 p.m. CT with the long jump.
