TULSA, Okla. – Oklahoma State had its seven-game winning streak snapped Tuesday night as Oral Roberts handed the 12th-ranked Cowboys a 6-5 loss at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 27-15-1, with two of those losses coming to ORU. OSU is winless in its last nine trips to the Golden Eagles' home field dating back to 1995.
OSU finished with seven hits in the contest and plated all of its runs in the seventh as the Pokes' late comeback bid fell short. Matt Kroon drove in three of those runs, while Dylan Gardner and Ryan Cash also collected RBIs.
Starter Brady Basso took the loss on the mound as the sophomore southpaw fell to 2-4 on the season.
ORU (27-15) jumped on the Cowboys early, tagging Basso for five runs on four hits in the bottom of the first. The Golden Eagles batted around and also took advantage of a pair of walks, while Jared Montoya provided the big blow in the inning with a three-RBI double.
With OSU trailing 5-0 after just one inning, Reza Aleaziz came out of the Cowboys' bullpen and turned in a strong performance. The right-hander worked three scoreless frames before a leadoff home run in the fifth, and he finished with five strikeouts while allowing just two hits in four innings of work.
The OSU offense did not get much going until the seventh. In that inning, consecutive singles by Christian Funk and Trevor Boone and a one-out walk to Carson McCusker loaded the bases. Gardner and Cash then drew back-to-back walks to bring home the Cowboys' first two runs.
Up next, Kroon cleared the bases with a double down the left-field line that made the score 6-5, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning as Kroon was stranded on third.
In the eighth, OSU had runners on first and second with one out, but ORU closer Kyler Stout came on and got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.
Still trailing 6-5 going into their final at bat, the Cowboys mounted another threat. Following a one-out infield single by Kroon, Colin Simpson stepped to plate and drilled a double to right field. Kroon raced for home but was cut down at the plate on the relay throw by ORU second baseman Nick Roark.
With the tying run in scoring position, Jon Littell struck out to end the game as Stout recorded his 10th save.
OSU returns to action for its final non-conference test of the regular season Friday when the Cowboys open a three-game series at Iowa.
