Schafer Claims U.S. Open Title at 97kg

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Former Oklahoma State wrestler Austin Schafer claimed his first career Senior U.S. Open Freestyle title at 97kg on Saturday afternoon. Former Cowboy Alex Dieringer and OSU freshman Daton Fix also made the finals at their respective weights.

With the win, Schafer earns an automatic bid to the best-of-three finals series at the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament.

Schafer defeated the top two seeds in the field. The former Cowboy scored a takedown at the buzzer for a 4-3 win over top-seeded Kyven Gadson in the semifinals on Friday night. In Saturday's finals match, Schafer defeated No. 2 seed Ty Walz in a 14-7 win.

In his U.S. Open senior debut at 57kg, freshman Daton Fix blazed his way to the finals with a pair of technical falls that were both wrapped up in under a minute, along with a 4-0 win over Daniel Deshazer. Matched up with two-time World Team member and reigning U.S. Open champion Anthony Ramos in the finals, Fix battled but came up short on criteria, 2-2.

At 79kg, Alex Dieringer and Kyle Dake turned in another tight finals match with Dake winning on criteria, 5-5. The weight's No. 2 seed, Dieringer dominated his side of the bracket, registering three technical falls on his way to the finals.

Despite coming up short, Fix and Dieringer both clinched spots to compete at the World Team Trials in June. Former Cowboy Eddie Klimara also claimed a spot at the Team Trials, finishing seventh at 57kg.

In junior freestyle action, Kaden Gfeller will compete at the Junior World Team Trials after finishing third at 65kg. Incoming freshman Travis Wittlake will as well with a seventh place finish at 79kg.
