OSU Relay Squads Make History at National Relay Championships
April 28, 2018 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. —The Oklahoma State track and field teams produced two of the top-25 4x1500-meter relay times in NCAA history at this weekend's inaugural National Relay Championships.
"They did a great job," head coach Dave Smith said. "They all ran really poised, intelligent races."
In the women's 4x1500-meter relay, it was a tight race between the Cowgirls (Ariane Ballner, Sinclaire Johnson, Kaylee Dodd, Molly Sughroue) and the hometown Arkansas relay squad came down to a gutsy anchor leg from Sughroue. She unleashed her notorious kick to edge out the Razorbacks in 17:45.75.
"Giving the baton to Molly on the anchor is always a good feeling," Smith said. "She came from way back to win it for us. All of a sudden with 100 meters to go, she's back in the race and coming home like a freight train."
To follow, the men's 4x1500-meter quartet of Garrett Calhoun, Kevin Mulcaire, Ashenafi Hatte and Luis Martinez would earn the No. 19 time in NCAA history, running 15:19.43 and taking third overall in the event.
In the final relay event of the meet, the men's 4x400-meter squad picked up a massive season best while winning their heat. Kwame Donyinah, Brandon Singleton, Tanner Green and Tyler Jackson edged out Michigan in the heat with a time of 3:10.72.
In the individual events, two female sprinters made school history with their 400-meter marks. Nicolette Dixon ran the event in 54.31, while Amira Coleman was right behind in 54.50.
Their times slot them at third and fourth, respectively, in the event in OSU history.
Emily Rogers would also make an improvement in her premiere event, the high jump. Rogers went on to clear 1.70m/5-7 for the first time since becoming a Cowgirl, earning her No. 5 OSU all-time and second in the event.
Senior sprinter Stephanie Ferrante cracked sub-2:10 in the women's 800 meters for the first time in her decorated OSU career. While also being named the Oklahoma State Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, she shaved three seconds off her personal-best time finishing the race in 2:09.97.
"That was great for her," Smith said. "She's worked really hard and she's finally starting to see the benefits of all the hard work she's put in, so I'm really excited for her."
Finally, senior Brandon Singleton also set a personal record, going 47.39 in the 400 meters for the fastest time in his career at OSU.
The teams will have one final regular-season meet next weekend in the form of the Arkansas Twilight. It's set to be a one-day meet taking place on Friday, May 4, on John McDonnell Field.
