STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State football team hosted its annual Spring Game Saturday on a warm and sunny afternoon in front of 20,000 fans at Boone Pickens Stadium.
It provided an opportunity for Cowboy fans to get their first look at the 2018 team, with the offense scrimmaging against the defense for more than 90 plays.
"We had a good day today for what we were trying to accomplish," coach Mike Gundy said. "I was hoping for about only 40 or 50 plays in the first half and we ended up with 67. We had to run it pretty fast in the second half. It was a good workout. We got some guys some reps in a game-like situation."
Landon Wolf scored the first touchdown of the day on a 51-yard catch from senior quarterback Taylor Cornelius. Cornelius went 15-for-27 on the afternoon with more than 250 passing yards and a touchdown. Quarterback John Kolar accounted for the Cowboys' other passing touchdown late in the fourth with an 8-yard completion to LC Greenwood.
"I thought we threw the ball well," Gundy said. "I thought Taylor (Cornelius) threw the ball well. There are guys who are going to play wideout for us next year that haven't had a chance to play much based on the guys we've had here. (Tyron) Johnson is the only guy who has had many reps with Cornelius."
Wolf led all receivers with nearly 100 yards receiving, and Tyron Johnson finished with more than 70, including a game-long 52-yard reception from Cornelius.
"Taylor has done a great job this spring being a leader and completing throws that coach is wanting him to complete," Johnson said. "He has done a great job."
Redshirt freshman Chuba Hubbard led the Cowboys in rushing and accounted for more than 80 yards in the rushing attack while averaging nearly 8 yards per carry. J.D. King accounted for both rushing touchdowns for the Cowboys, with one coming as the clock wound down in the first quarter and the other in the third.
"We've got four running backs right now, and we're going to use them," Gundy said. "We would like to limit Justice Hill's carries in a game to 15 or so. I think we'll be able to do that. I feel good about where we're at from a depth standpoint."
The Cowboy defense recorded five sacks, led by junior linebacker Calvin Bundage with two. The Cowboy also had three tackles-for-loss on the day.
"The whole defense is more aggressive," Cornelius said. "You didn't see it a whole lot today, but they are blitzing left and right. Very aggressive defense. They've been tough all spring."
With four pass breakups and consistent pressure on the quarterback, Gundy said he liked where the defense is at.
"The spring is hard to evaluate just based on going against each other for five or six weeks. The comments I had about coach Knowles a month ago are the same. He's highly intelligent, and I like his demeanor. I think he understands how to teach and coach the young players."
The Spring Game marked the final day of OSU's 15 spring practices. The Cowboys return to the field for practice in the fall, and are scheduled to open the 2018 season at Boone Pickens Stadium on Sept. 1 against Missouri State.
