Cowboy Football Begins Final Week of Spring Practice
April 23, 2018 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State football team began its final week of spring practice Monday, wrapping up a two-hour practice at the Sherman E. Smith Training Center this afternoon.
It marked the 13th practice of the spring and the final time for the Cowboys to wear pads before Saturday's Spring Game. After practice, coach Mike Gundy met with okstate.com to discuss practice and the Spring Game. His comments:
Coach Mike Gundy
On what he expects to see in the fall:
"Well we like where we're at. We still have a lot of work, but our offensive line got really good reps this spring because we had a number of guys that didn't get work. It's going to make me feel a lot better about our twos right now. Nothing's changed at the running back spot. I like where we're at. I like where Taylor (Cornelius) is at the quarterback spot. We got a lot of work versus a very physical defense in the spring for the wide outs. I still like the speed that we have on defense. (Jordan) Brailford, Jarrell Owens, Trey Carter, Enoch (Smith), those guys, really run for down guys. (Justin) Phillips runs at the backer spot. We took some lumps last year at corner playing freshmen and I think those guys are going to play a lot better this next year so it's going to pay off a little bit for us."
On setting the tone for the summer in the last week of spring:
"I think it's important that we have fun in the Spring Game. Our next practice will be in shorts and helmets so we'll be somewhat limited. I just talked to the team after practice today about staying focused on the task at hand and there's a lot of work to be put in in June and July. They have to train on their own. They're responsible for their plays and understanding their responsibilities on everything we do. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I think the guys will be focused. It will be interesting to see how the rest of it comes out in August."
On the defense after watching all spring:
"I like how the coaching staff is working together. I think, for being out at four weeks for the most part, that they've done a fantastic job of implementing the system. The players were excited about learning, and I see them using their ability to run fast and get to the ball. That's very important in this conference."
On what fans can expect to see at the Spring Game on Saturday:
"I think we're going to be out there and we're going to play hard. We're hoping to get a good quality first half in and then second half, just based on total number of plays, we might use a running clock, but it will be very fan friendly. We'll have a get-together after the scrimmage where the fans can come down and spend some time with the players. We've extended the amount of time that we're on the field there. It should be a fun day for everybody involved."
