April 02, 2018 | Cowboy Baseball
IRVING, Texas – Oklahoma State collected its first weekly award winners from the Big 12 Conference in 2018 today as Jon Littell was named the Big 12 Player of the Week while Carson McCusker picked up Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors.
Littell sizzled at the plate and led the Cowboys to a perfect 4-0 week that included a road win at Oklahoma and OSU's first-ever, three-game Big 12 series sweep of TCU. The senior outfielder was 9-for-15 (.600) at the plate in the four games with three doubles, two triples and four RBIs. He also scored nine runs, drew five walks, stole a base and turned in a 1.067 slugging percentage.
In leading the Cowboys to a sweep of 18th-ranked TCU, Littell lit up the Big 12's top pitching staff, going 8-for-11 (.727) with three doubles, a pair of triples and four RBIs. He scored nine runs and collected 15 total bases and a 1.364 slugging percentage. In the series opener he tied a career high with four hits and four runs as he went 4-for-4. In the final two games, he had two hits and two RBIs in each contest.
Littell hit safely in all four games during the week to extend his hitting streak to eight games, and he raised his season batting average 62 points to .283.
McCusker played a key role in OSU's Saturday doubleheader sweep of the Horned Frogs. The sophomore entered the day having made just one start on the season and with only one hit, a single, in 11 at-bats. He started both games of the doubleheader in right field and went 4-for-6 with three home runs, all solo shots, while also making several highlight-reel defensive plays in the outfield.
Against a TCU pitching staff that led the Big 12 in ERA, McCusker provided OSU's first run in the third inning of game one with his first-career homer as he deposited a pitch over the wall in center field. In the nightcap, he became the first Cowboy to hit multiple homers in a game this season as he blasted solo shots in the third and fifth innings en route to a 3-for-3 effort at the plate that also included a walk.
