Abdi, Cowgirl DMR Earns First-Team All-America Honors

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Oklahoma State track and field senior Hassan Abdi and the Cowgirl distance medley relay squad both earned first-team All-America honors at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships on Friday in Gilliam Indoor Stadium.
Abdi's award marks his second indoor first-team honor, third overall in an OSU uniform and first open event All-America honor.
"I feel like all the hard work is paying off," Abdi said. "Now, it puts a lot of pressure on myself because I want to do even better in outdoors."
Abdi sat toward the back of the lead pack until about a mile to go. At the mile mark, he pushed his way into the middle of the bunch until he was able to speed up in the latter part of the race as OSU track and field fans have become accustomed to seeing.
The Cowgirl DMR team also found the podium for the Pokes and earned first-team All-America honors. The quartet of Kaylee Dodd, Ambra Wesley, Abbie Hetherington and Ariane Ballner took sixth in 11:04.65.
For Wesley, Hetherington and Ballner, this was their first career All-America honors.
"Everybody showed up and they did it together as a group," assistant coach Cody Halsey said. "It was fun seeing them so excited."
Despite not qualifying in the 800 meters, Dodd went on to run the 1,200-meter leg of the DMR just 90 minutes after her race.
Seniors Molly Sughroue and Dodd represented the Cowgirls in the individual events, with both earning their way to second-team All-America honors in the mile and 800 meters, respectively.
The Cowboys finished the meet with six points, while the Cowgirls wrapped up the event with three team points.
For Dave Smith's squads, the outdoor season begins next weekend with the Tulsa Duels. At last year's duels, the Pokes took home six event wins and multiple top-five finishes.
"There was a lot of racing to try to get everybody in," Halsey said. "I think everybody is ready for this week and for outdoors to start."
