STILLWATER – Oklahoma State utilized a timely eighth inning rally to defeat Eastern Michigan, 8-3, in the first game of its weekend series Friday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The win was the third in a row for the Cowboys, who improved to 8-4 on the season, including a 4-1 mark at home. EMU fell to 3-10 with the loss.
Carson Teel picked up the win in relief with a career night on the mound, while Christian Funk was 4-for-4 at the plate and Colin Simpson added three hits and a pair of RBIs.
In the decisive eighth inning, with the game tied 3-3 and two outs, OSU rallied for five runs on five hits, which proved to be the difference in the game.
Trevor Boone got things started with a single through the right side, and up next, pinch hitter Daniel DeSimone lined a base hit to center field. A throwing error by Eagles' center fielder Cameron Cruz on the play brought Boone home to give the Cowboys a 4-3 advantage.
The scoring would continue as Andrew Rosa singled to bring home another run, and Simpson followed that with an opposite-field double to make the score 6-3. The inning was capped off by Matt Kroon's two-run home run to center field, his second round tripper of the season.
Teel was masterful in relief of starter Jonathan Heasley as he tallied 10 strikeouts, tying his career high, over four scoreless innings. The southpaw allowed just two hits and did not issue a walk.
Teel came out of the bullpen in the sixth facing a bases-loaded, no-outs situation with the Cowboys clinging to a 3-2 lead. An error by shortstop Max Hewitt helped the tying run score, but Teel retired the next three Eagle hitters, the last two via strikeout, to get out of the jam.
Heasley worked five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and recording seven strikeouts. The sophomore right-hander has posted at least six strikeouts in each of his four starts this season.
The two teams return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
