STILLWATER – Oklahoma State had its three-game winning streak come to an end Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium as Eastern Michigan knocked off the Cowboys, 9-7.
The loss drops OSU to 8-5 on the season and sets up a rubber game for Sunday's series finale, which is scheduled for a noon start.
The eighth inning doomed the Cowboys as EMU (4-10) rallied for five runs in the frame to take its first lead before OSU left the bases full in the bottom of the inning after pulling to within a run.
Matt Kroon and Jake Taylor each had two hits in Saturday's contest, while Dylan Gardner was 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs. Brady Basso took the loss in relief, falling to 0-3 on the season.
OSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead after plating two runs in both the second and third innings. In the second, it was a single by Gardner bringing home the Cowboys' first two runs — and marking the first two RBIs of the freshman's career — before the third inning saw Kroon pick up an RBI double and Christian Funk drive in a run on a groundout.
After posting four scoreless frames to open the game, Joe Lienhard got into trouble in the fifth as the Eagles opened the inning with five-straight hits against the Cowboy right-hander and scored three runs to cut the OSU lead to 4-3.
The Cowboys added a run to their lead in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Rosa, but OSU would not be up for long.
EMU opened the pivotal inning with a walk and single against southpaw Noah Sifrit, bringing Basso out of the bullpen. But the sophomore struggled, with an error loading the bases before a walk brought in the tying run.
Tied 4-4, the Eagles got back-to-back, two-RBI hits from Max Schuemann and Jeff Timko to take an 8-5 advantage before Basso struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
OSU had a great opportunity to regain the lead in the bottom of the inning but came up just short.
Kroon led off the Cowboys' half of the eighth with a single and walks to Funk and Jon Littell loaded the bases with no outs. Taylor then stepped to the plate and lifted an RBI single to right field to make the score 8-6.
The rally temporarily stalled as Ryan Cash and Trevor Boone struck out, but pinch hitter Michael Neustifter picked up an RBI on a walk to cut the OSU deficit to 8-7.
But that was as close as the Cowboys would get as Rosa flied out to end the inning.
EMU added an insurance run in the ninth; the Pokes opened the bottom of the inning with a walk to bring the tying run to the plate but that runner was stranded on second base as Littell struck out to end the game.
