STILLWATER – Oklahoma State suffered its second-straight loss to Eastern Michigan Sunday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium, dropping the rubber game of the series, 6-5.
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 8-6, while EMU improved to 5-10.
Trevor Boone was 2-for-4 at the plate for the Cowboys, while Jon Littell drove in a pair of runs. Andrew Rosa and Colin Simpson also had RBIs for OSU.
Peyton Battenfield took the loss on the mound to fall to 0-1 as the right-hander allowed what proved to be the winning run with two outs in the eighth inning.
The Cowboys jumped out to an early lead in the contest when Ryan Cash, who led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk, scored on an error to put OSU up 1-0.
But the Eagles would take the lead in the top of the fourth against OSU starter C.J. Varela as Nate Jones tied the score with an RBI single before a squeeze bunt by Cameron Cruz plated the go-ahead run.
Still down 2-1 in the fifth, OSU rallied to go back on top. With the bases full of Cowboys and one out, Littell sent a line drive to right field that got under the glove of a diving Jones and rolled to the wall for a two-RBI double and a 3-2 lead for the Pokes.
An inning later, OSU extended its lead to 5-2. Cameron Dobbs led off the frame with a double and scored two batters later on a triple by Rosa. Up next, Simpson pushed the Cowboys' lead to three with a sacrifice fly.
But the visitors quickly erased their deficit in the seventh. After Reza Aleaziz walked the first two hitters in the inning, Cole Hearrean came out of the bullpen and gave up an RBI single to Kolton Schenker, and an error by Boone in right field allowed a second run to score on the play. Trailing by one, EMU tied the score on a sacrifice fly by Jones to make the score 5-5.
The Eagles would get the decisive run in the eighth. Jeff Timko led off the inning with a single off Battenfield, who then retired the next two hitters. But with Timko on second, Eli Gora stepped to the plate and lined a single to center field to put EMU up by a 6-5 count.
EMU reliever Mitchell Sparks would set down the Cowboys in order in both the eighth and ninth innings to seal the win.
OSU returns to action Tuesday when the Cowboys host Dallas Baptist at 3 p.m.
