PHOENIX – Oklahoma State got back in the win column Sunday with a 3-2 win over Arizona State in 10 innings at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The victory snapped OSU's three-game losing streak as the Cowboys improved to 6-4 on the season; the Sun Devils fell to 6-6.
Ryan Cash's two-out RBI single in the top of the 10th was the difference, and Carson Teel tossed a career-high 7 1/3 innings in relief to earn the win on the mound.
ASU took the game's initial lead in the third inning, plating an unearned run against OSU starter C.J. Varela on a two-out RBI hit by Gage Workman. Teel would come out of the bullpen and induce a ground ball and force out to limit the damage.
The Cowboys would not be down long, however. Matt Kroon led off the top of the fourth with a walk and after a single by Christian Funk put runners on the corners, Jon Littell delivered an RBI single to tie the score at 1-1.
Up next, Jake Taylor provided OSU with its first lead of the weekend as he popped a ball to short right field that fell just inside the foul line to bring home a run and put the Pokes up, 2-1.
OSU held its lead until the sixth when Spencer Torkelson led off the inning with a home run to center field, a homer that marked the freshman's seventh of the season and tied the game at 2-2.
Teel worked out of a jam in the ninth after the Sun Devils put runners on first and second with one out as he got Alika Williams to ground into an inning-ending double play to force extra innings.
In the 10th, Cody Milligan got the OSU rally started with a two-out walk, and Littell followed with a single. Up next, Cash delivered a base hit through the right side, and Milligan raced around the bases and slid in around the tag at home plate to give the Pokes a 3-2 lead.
The bottom of the inning saw Teel face the top of the ASU order, and leadoff hitter Gage Canning opened the frame with an infield single. After a sac bunt moved Canning into scoring position, Teel recorded the second out on a groundout before an intentional walk to Torkelson put the winning run on first.
But Teel sealed the win when he got Gage Workman to foul out to first base.
Teel posted five strikeouts over the final 7 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on six hits and walking a pair as he picked up his first win of the season.
OSU returns to action Wednesday when the Cowboys travel to Springfield, Mo., to take on Missouri State at 3 p.m.
