Track and Field Picks Up Big Marks in Weekend Trifecta
March 31, 2018 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER — The Oklahoma State track and field program wrapped up a loaded weekend in Tulsa, Texas and California with six NCAA-qualifying marks on Friday and Saturday.
"We had a mixed bag," head coach Dave Smith said. "But overall, it's a good start and we got a lot of good stuff done."
In Palo Alto, California, Gintare Zenkeviciute ran the women's 10,000 meters in 34:15.18, earning her the tenth-fastest time in OSU history. Zenkeviciute's time is a personal-best mark and the best by a Cowgirl in the event since 2016.
"Gintare had a huge PR in the 10K," Smith said. "So, that was pretty impressive."
Molly Sughroue and Ariane Ballner would run nearly identical times in different sections of the women's 1,500m, running a 4:20.64 and 4:20.88, respectively. The marks are expected to qualify them for the NCAA Championships in June.
At the Stanford Invitational, Ashenafi Hatte and Kevin Mulcaire would run in different sections of the men's 5,000, posting two impressive times of 14:00.87 and 14:05.02, respectively. If the postseason began tomorrow, Hatte and Mulcaire would qualify for the NCAA West Regionals.
"They had a great race," Smith said. "They probably punched their tickets."
In her second outdoor season as a Cowgirl, Sinclaire Johnson showed improvement in the women's 800 meters, running the second-fastest time of the day for OSU in 2:07.92.
Albeit being in the slow section of the event, newcomer Isai Rodriguez ran a massive personal-best time in the first section of the men's 5,000 meters, taking gold in the section in 14:13.53.
"That's a really good sign for the future for him," Smith said. "He's going to be a superstar."
Down South at the Texas Relays, Emily Rogers continued to climb her way up the OSU all-time high jump list. Rogers took third in the event, leaping a height of 1.68m/5-6, which slots her in a tie for sixth-best in school history.
Closer to home at the ORU Invitational, Michaela Vasey made waves in the women's javelin. In the first event of the meet for the Cowgirls, her throw of 39.07m/128-2 earned her No. 6 on the Cowgirl all-time performers' list.
On the track, newcomer Nicolette Dixon ran a blazing 54.91 in the 400 meters to overtake former decorated Cowgirl Kaela Edwards for No. 4 in outdoor school history. The mark represents the fastest time in the event by a Cowgirl in 2018 by more than two full seconds.
Zach Andrew kicked off day two of the ORU Invitational for the Cowboys. His hammer throw of 52.98m/173-10 further solidified his spot at No. 2 in school history. The top spot was set by former Cowboy Nick Miller in 2016.
Miller competed in the Stanford Invitational against the Pokes this weekend, breaking the British record in the hammer throw in the process. He launched a mark of 78.29m/256-10 en route to a gold in the event, crushing fellow Great Britain competitor Taylor Campbell.
Texas-transfer Blake Scott continued his march up the OSU all-time list in the men's pole vault. Scott recorded a height of 4.88m/16-0 to improve to No. 7 in the school record books.
Natalie Manders also continued to show promise in the women's discus, cracking the OSU all-time list at No. 10 in the event with her second-place finish of 45.49m/149-3.
To put a stamp on a productive weekend for the Pokes, the quartet of Nicolette Dixon, Ambra Wesley, Danielle Coleman and Amira Coleman performed the second-fastest 4x400-meter relay in OSU outdoor history, taking first in the event in 3:40.44.
"For the ones who got qualifying marks, the pressure is off," Smith said. "That's a really good situation to be in."
The Pokes resume action in Tempe, Arizona next weekend at the Sun Angel Classic. Follow @run4okstate to keep up with all things OSU Track and Field.
