STILLWATER — Oklahoma State completed a three-game series sweep of 18th-ranked TCU Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium as the Cowboys capped the day with a 9-8 victory.
After claiming a 12—7 win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, OSU picked up its second walk-off win of the series when Noah Sifrit slid safely into home plate with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Trevor Boone picked up an RBI on the play as the Cowboys recorded up their fourth-straight win and improved to 15-10-1 overall and 4-2 in Big 12 Conference play.
The perfect weekend marked the first time OSU has swept a series against TCU in Big 12 play (the Frogs began competing in the league during the 2013 season). Sunday's finale also tied for the largest comeback by the Cowboys' this season as they overcame a six-run deficit.
Carson McCusker led the OSU comeback with a 3-for-3 effort that included a pair of solo home runs, while Boone, Jon Littell and Daniel DeSimone also collected two RBIs apiece.
Reza Aleaziz collected the win on the mound as he kept TCU off the scoreboard over the final two innings to improve to 2-0. Peyton Battenfield also had an outstanding effort in relief as he worked a career-high five innings and allowed only one run on six hits.
The Horned Frogs (14-10, 3-3) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings as they knocked OSU starting pitcher Jonathan Heasley out of the game early.
OSU would chip away at TCU's lead as the night went on, starting with McCusker's lead off home run in the bottom of the third.
McCusker's second solo shot of the day came in the fifth and started a three-run inning for the Pokes. After Cameron Dobbs walked and Matt Kroon singled, Littell doubled to left center field to cut the Horned Frogs lead to 6-5, a hit that also extended Littell's hitting streak to eight games.
Littell led of the bottom of the seventh with his second double of the game. Christian Funk followed with a single to put runners on the corners with no outs for Michael Neustifter, who plated Littell on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 6-6.
With one out, DeSimone drove a ball to the right-center field gap for an RBI double to give the Cowboys their first lead of the game. The scoring wouldn't stop there as Trevor Boone singled up the middle to bring home DeSimone and push OSU's lead to 8-6.
TCU responded with two runs in the eighth to tie the game but failed to score in the ninth as it left the go-ahead run stranded at third.
In the home half of the ninth, Funk drew a leadoff walk, and Sifrit, who was the winning pitcher in the first game of the doubleheader, came in to pinch run. Up next, Neustifter lifted a fly ball to right field that Connor Wanhanen dropped for an error. A fielder's choice then moved Cowboys to the corners with one out and brought Boone to the plate.
Boone would ground a ball to second baseman Coby Boulware, who fired home. But Sifrit found the plate before the tag of catcher Zach Humphreys to set off the Cowboys' celebration.
The Cowboys return to action for a midweek road test against nationally ranked Wichita State Tuesday at 6 p.m.
