Cowgirls Snap Skid, Sweep Home-Opening Doubleheader
March 02, 2018 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The No. 24 Oklahoma State softball team opened its home slate with a pair of run-rule victories against Omaha, 8-0, and Maine, 19-1, on the first day of the Mizuno Classic at Cowgirl Stadium.
It is the fastest that OSU (11-6) has reached 11 wins since 2014 when the Cowgirls achieved the feat in 15 games. The victories also snapped the Cowgirls' four-game losing streak.
"I'm very happy with the way that we came out and played like OSU," said head coach Kenny Gajewski. "We came out and took care of what we could do and obviously pitched extremely well. We gave up a total of three hits and one run. Any time you can pitch like that, you've got a chance to win a lot of games. Offensively, Shippy, Pennington and Holcomb had some huge days, as well as Mackenzie Thomas. There was a bunch of other in there too that had some big days, but those were the biggest days.
"We got a lot of offense up and down, and that's the type of team I think that we are. I'm happy with the way that we answered and bounced back."
Emmie Robertson handled duties in the circle against Omaha, pitching a one-hit complete game en route to earning her fifth win of the season. The right-handed hurler allowed no walks and struck out seven batters in her shutout performance.
Behind Robertson, OSU got a pair of home runs, including a third-inning grand slam from Whitney Whitehorn that pushed the Cowgirls' lead to 6-0. Whitehorn's blast was her third of the season and cleared the batter's eye in center field. It was the sixth grand slam by a Cowgirl during head coach Kenny Gajewski's tenure and the first since Randee O'Donnell's inside-the-park grand slam against North Texas on April 12, 2017.
Mackenzie Thomas provided the second home run in the home half of the fifth inning to tack on another run to OSU's lead. Her offensive production was followed by Vanessa Shippy's walk-off single through the right side. Shippy's RBI was her second of the game.
In the nightcap, OSU poured it on the Black Bears early, scoring seven runs in the game's opening frame.
The Cowgirls added five more runs in the home half of the second inning, including a three-run home run to straightaway center from Mackenzie Thomas. It was Thomas' second home run during the doubleheader and the third of her OSU career. The Pokes have now hit a Big 12-best 21 home runs so far in 2018.
Vanessa Shippy capped off a huge day at the plate with a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the fourth that gave OSU a 15-1 lead. Shippy finished 5-for-7 at the plate with two extra-base hits and seven runs batted in on Friday. Her 119 career runs batted in ranks sixth in program history.
"The fans we have in Stillwater are second to none," Shippy said of the Cowgirls' home crowd. "I love playing here and playing for this school. It's good to be home. It was cool to hear our walk-up songs and there was a lot of good energy tonight, and a lot of that has to do with the fans we have here in Stillwater."
Sydney Pennington and Maddi Holcomb both also logged five hits at the plate on Friday. Pennington recorded one double and scored twice, while Holcomb logged two triples and drove in two.
Oklahoma State will be back in action tomorrow for its second matchups of the weekend against Omaha and Maine. The Cowgirls will open with the Black Bears at 4 p.m. before meeting the Mavericks once again at 6:30 p.m.
