Cowboys Wrap Up Session Three with Seven in All-America Contention

CLEVELAND – The Oklahoma State wrestling team finished session three at the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships Friday with seven wrestlers remaining in the brackets. All seven are one win away from earning All-America honors, and could finish as high as third place in their respective weight classes.
OSU's seven remaining wrestlers marks the third-most of any team in the tournament, trailing only tournament leaders Ohio State and Penn State. Those Cowboys include Nick Piccininni (125), Kaid Brock (133), Dean Heil (141), Boo Lewallen (149), Chandler Rogers (165), Jacobe Smith (174) and Derek White (HWT).
The day started in quarterfinals, where the Cowboys had five grapplers competing with all but one wrestling a higher seed and two wrestling the top seed in their respective weight classes.
White turned in a strong effort in the heavyweight quarterfinals, despite a tough draw in Olympic champion and top-seeded Kyle Snyder of Ohio State. Trailing, 2-1, in the second period after a couple of stall calls, White was able to score a takedown on Snyder to take a 3-2 lead. After a Snyder escape to tie the match, the Buckeye scored a takedown of his own to regain the lead that he would not relinquish on the way to a 6-3 decision.
Despite the loss, White showed toughness in hanging with the two-time NCAA Champion, holding Snyder—who had averaged 19 points per match in his two previous contests in the tournament—to single digits for only the third time this season. The only other wrestler to do it this year was second-ranked Adam Coon of Michigan, twice.
At 141 pounds, Dean Heil came up short in a heartbreaker to Cornell's third-seeded Yianni Diakomihalis, dashing hopes of a third-straight NCAA title. Heil led for most of the bout, and 5-4 with just over 20 seconds to go, but Diakomihalis would scores the decisive takedown late in the final period to lock up the win. Heil will face Nebraska's Chad Red Friday night to try to secure his fourth career All-America honor.
Matched up with No. 1 seed Zain Retherford in the 149-pound finals, Boo Lewallen dropped a 20-2 technical fall in his quarterfinal match. He will take on No. 6 Justin Oliver of Central Michigan to try and pick up the first All-America recognition of his career.
Kaid Brock will match up with No. 10 Jack Mueller of Virginia in Friday evening's blood rounds after giving up a 13-5 major decision to NC State's Tariq Wilson. Nick Piccininni will face Minnesota's eighth-seeded Ethan Lizak after being pinned by No. 3 Spencer Lee of Iowa in the quarterfinals. Both will be attempting to become All-Americans for the second time in their careers.
Chandler Rogers continued his way through wrestlebacks in the first session of the day, tallying an impressive sudden victory upset over No. 7 Logan Massa of Michigan and coming up on the high side of a 10-8 thriller over No. 15 Anthony Valencia of Arizona State. He will seek his second career All-America honor Friday night against No. 4 Chad Walsh of Rider.
Jacobe Smith will look to become an All-American for the first time Friday night against Northern Iowa's seventh-seeded Taylor Lujan in a rematch of the Big 12 semifinals. Smith earned a 6-4 sudden victory win over NC State's Daniel Bullard in his first match of the day, followed by a convincing 11-3 major decision over Forrest Pryzbysz to advance.
OSU sits in 16th on the team scoreboard with 17 team points. Ohio State (80.5 points) retained its lead through three sessions, followed by Penn State (67).
