STILLWATER – A late rally wasn't enough for Oklahoma State as the Cowboys suffered their fourth-straight loss Friday night, falling to Seton Hall, 10-7, at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
OSU (8-8) had 10 hits in the contest, headlined by Matt Kroon's three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth. Kroon was 2-for-4 with a career-high four RBIs, while Colin Simpson and Michael Neustifter also added two hits apiece.
Jonathan Heasley took the loss on the mound as the sophomore right-hander allowed seven runs on six hits in five innings of work to fall to 2-2. He walked four and also recorded four strikeouts, the first time he failed to reach six strikeouts in his five starts this season.
Seton Hall (7-8) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to Christian Del Castillo's two-run homer to right field. The Pirates would add four runs on four hits in the fourth before plating another run in the fifth to extend their lead to 7-0.
The Cowboys finally trimmed their deficit in the seventh with a four-run frame. After Neustifter reached base on an error, Cade Cabbiness doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third. With two outs, freshman Dylan Gardner capitalized by doubling to right-center field, scoring both Neustifter and Cabbiness.
Kroon kept things going with a single through the left side, scoring Gardner and cutting Seton Hall's lead to four. Up next, Colin Simpson brought Kroon home on a single to center to cap off the four run inning for the Cowboys.
Peyton Battenfield came out of the bullpen in relief of Heasley in the sixth and put up zeroes on the scoreboard before allowing three unearned runs in the top of the ninth, with two throwing errors by the sophomore pitcher proving costly.
With OSU down to its final three outs and trailing 10-4, Trevor Boone led off the bottom half of the ninth by reaching on an error before Gardner walked. Kroon then smashed his third home run of the season over the center field wall to bring the Cowboys back within three. However, the Cowboys' late rally would end there.
OSU returns to action Saturday at 6 p.m. when the Cowboys take on Missouri State at Reynolds Stadium.
