Day One Highlights
CLEVELAND – The Oklahoma State wrestling team went 5-1 in the round of 16 during Session II of the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Thursday evening at Quicken Loans Arena. Five Cowboys will compete in the NCAA quarterfinals on Friday morning.
The Cowboys sit tied with Cornell in seventh on the team scoreboard with 15 points after two sessions of wrestling. Ohio State is the clubhouse leader with 36.
Cowboys Nick Piccininni, Kaid Brock, Dean Heil, Boo Lewallen and Derek White are set to compete for a semifinals spot at their respective weight class after each tallied impressive wins during Thursday's second session. OSU's Chandler Rogers and Jacobe Smith are also still alive in wrestlebacks heading into Friday.
"We had a little bit of an up-and-down day, but I was pleased with five of the six guys that pushed through to the quarterfinals," head coach John Smith said. "That was good to see. We took a little hit with Weigel in the first match of the day. It did some damage—enough that he couldn't get on the mat. We just need to rebound and focus on tough matches tomorrow. It will be a full day of wrestling."
Piccininni started the night off with a 6-3 decision over 11th-seeded Sean Russell of Edinboro. The Cowboy scored takedowns in the first and second periods and controlled the match throughout, not allowing any offensive points from Edinboro. Piccininni will face No. 3 Spencer Lee of Iowa in the quarterfinals on Friday in a matchup of the contest in Iowa City earlier this season that Lee took, 10-5.
Brock will also see a familiar foe in the quarterfinals in NC State's Tariq Wilson after the OSU redshirt sophomore handled No. 13 Bryan Lantry of Buffalo in the round of 16. Brock opened the match hot with a couple of takedowns and a nearfall to lead, 6-1, after the first period and never looked back as he finished off the 10-3 win to set up the bout with Wilson. The Cowboy took the last meeting between the two wrestlers by way of a 16-1 technical fall in Italy.
Boo Lewallen continues his first career run in the NCAA Championships with a 10-6 victory over former All-American No. 9 Max Thomsen in a bout that served as a rematch of the 149-pound Big 12 Championship. Lewallen led wire to wire, opening with a takedown and nearfall to lead 5-3 after the first period and added a takedown and reversal over the final four minutes to keep the Panther at bay. The Yukon, Okla., native will face his toughest test of the season thus far when he battles No. 1 Zain Retherford of Penn State in the quarterfinals.
Derek White outlasted No. 8 seed Tanner Hall of Arizona State in his second match of the day, defeating the Sun Devil in the first tiebreaker to advance. Tied at three-all at the end of regulation, the two headed to sudden victory where neither could convert on a takedown to claim the win. In the first 30 seconds of the tiebreaker, White was able to escape, and picked up an extra point on Hall's second stalling call. Hall started the second 30 seconds in the down position and was able to escape to cut White's lead to 5-4, but just before he was whistled for locked hands to give the Cowboy another penalty point and all but lock up the match.
White will have a challenge in his quarterfinal match as well on Friday, as he'll face Ohio State's Kyle Snyder in his next match. Snyder is a two-time NCAA Champion and the youngest Olympic champion in United States wrestling history.
Jacobe Smith came up just short in his matchup with No. 4 Jordan Kutler of Lehigh, as Kutler came away with the 4-2 decision. Smith will face NC State's Daniel Bullard in wrestlebacks on Friday. The Cowboy took the last meeting between the two grapplers, 7-2, in Italy earlier this season.
Following a tough loss in the first session on Thursday morning, Chandler Rogers rebounded nicely in the day's second session with a 16-1 technical fall over Indiana's Bryce Martin in the second period. Rogers racked up three takedowns and two nearfalls in the bout to wrap up the win in 4:40.
Friday evening saw two Pokes' seasons come to a close. Keegan Moore was pinned in the second period of his match with Penn's Joe Heyob to bring his final record on the year to 18-10 overall. After suffering an injury in his first match of the day, Weigel was forced to medically forfeit his bout with Wisconsin's Hunter Ritter. Weigel finishes his junior season at 11-3, which included six top-20 wins.
Session III is set to begin Friday at 11 a.m. ET. Coverage is available on ESPNU or watchespn.com.
