Woodard Among Select Group Chosen For Game Changing Retreat
February 28, 2018 | Cowgirl Soccer
ATLANTA – Oklahoma State soccer standout Haley Woodard has been selected as one of 15 student-athletes to participate as a cohort member in the inaugural Game Changing Retreat in June.
Â
The Game Changing Retreat is a professional development experience that aims to position attendees for success as they start their journeys in sports business. The event, which is hosted by The Winning Edge Leadership Academy, is set for June 21-24 in Miami, Fla.; the Winning Edge Leadership Academy is a nonprofit started by Corinne Milien and Maria Taylor to develop the next generation of women and minority leaders in sports business.
Â
The inaugural cohort features student-athletes attending schools from eight states, three athletes from Historically Black Colleges & Universities, seven athletes who are currently in or have completed graduate school and four athletes who are currently working as young professionals in the industry. All 15 cohort members have demonstrated success on and off the field of play.
Â
Woodard, a senior-to-be for the Cowgirls who in 2017 became the fourth All-American in OSU women's soccer history and was named the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Year, was selected from a pool of more than 50 applicants.
Â
"I'm incredibly excited for this opportunity," Woodard said. "The chance to meet and learn from so many leaders in the sports industry who are doing some of the things I'd like to do in my career and sharing advice and ideas on getting where I want to go is going to be awesome. Also meeting other athletes with the same types of goals and aspirations, it's just going to be a fun and unique experience that I'm thankful to have."
Â
The Game Changing Retreat is an intensive, multi-day experience that will feature networking dinners with top sports executives and topical group discussions led by sports industry professionals serving as retreat mentors. The 2018 mentors include: Will Baggett (College Football Playoff), Dell Robinson (Spelman Johnson), Dr. Julie Shaw (Women'sSports Foundation), Maria Taylor (ESPN) and Lynda Tealer (University of Florida Athletics Association).
Â
"It was not easy to select the first cohort for our inaugural Game Changing Retreat, but I believe we hit the mark with this diverse collective of student-athletes who not only want to develop professionally, but also have a desire to give back to their schools and the industry," said Milien, retreat host and Executive Director of The Winning Edge Leadership. "Along with our retreat mentors, we look forward to working with them in advance of the retreat to ensure their experience is one that will prepare them to become successful sports business professionals."
