STILLWATER – After a series of postponed and rescheduled games due to weather, Oklahoma State defeated Marist, 5-3, in its first home game of the season Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the win, OSU improved to 3-1 on the season and is now 6-0 in home openers under head coach Josh Holliday. Marist fell to 0-4 on the year.
Matt Kroon led the Cowboys with a 2-for-2, three-RBI performance that included a double and a fifth inning home run — his first round tripper in an OSU uniform — that gave the Pokes a 4-1 lead. Kroon was also hit by a pitch twice.
Sophomore pitcher Jonathan Heasley earned the win on the mound as he went 5 2/3 innings, recording a career-high nine strikeouts and giving up three runs on five hits to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Joe Lienhard and Reza Aleaziz worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Heasley before Carson Teel pitched a perfect ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Cowboy second baseman Andrew Rosa went 1-for-2 and is now batting .600 on the year, while Jon Littell and Colin Simpson accounted for the other RBIs in the OSU victory.
Chris Tracz led the Marist offense, finishing 2-for-3 and driving in all three runs for the Red Foxes. Tracz gave the visitors their first run of the game when he homered to right field in the third inning to cut the OSU lead to 2-1.
In the sixth inning, Tracz recorded two more RBIs when his bases-loaded single brought home Matt Iantosca and Greg Kocinski to again cut the OSU deficit to one at 4-3.
The Cowboys responded in the bottom of the sixth when Collin Simpson grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Cameron Dobbs and gave the Pokes a 5-3 advantage.
OSU will wrap up its weekend action on Sunday against Marist. First pitch has been rescheduled for 12 p.m. at Reynolds Stadium.
