STILLWATER – Oklahoma State claimed its second-straight series win to begin the 2018 season as the Cowboys captured a 3-2 victory over Marist Sunday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The win was the third in a row for the Cowboys, who improved to 4-1 on the season, while Marist fell to 0-5.
Jon Littell, Colin Simpson and Matt Kroon each drove in runs for OSU, while Ben Leeper earned his first-career win in relief. Carson Teel recorded the save; the lefty has picked up a save in each game of the Cowboys' current winning streak and has three on the season, which equals his total from a year ago.
The Cowboys got on the board first Sunday with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. After Andrew Rosa led off with a double, Simpson brought him home with a one-out double to center field but was thrown out at third trying to stretch it to a triple.
Littell followed with his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center field, to put the Cowboys up, 2-0.
OSU starter Mitchell Stone found himself in trouble in the top of the second. The freshman southpaw loaded the bases with no outs on two singles and a walk but responded by striking out the next three Marist batters to get out of the inning unscathed.
OSU added its final run in the bottom of the second inning as Kroon hit into a fielder's choice to bring home Jake Taylor, who started in the DH spot for the Cowboys and went 2-for-4 in his first game at Reynolds Stadium.
After Stone struck out six in three scoreless innings of work, Peyton Battenfield came on in relief to open the fourth and allowed a run on three hits. The Red Foxes then cut the OSU lead to one on an RBI single by Chris Tracz to shallow center in the fifth, making it 3-2.
Marist threatened to tie the game or take the lead late in the contest but left the bases loaded in both the seventh and eighth innings and finished the game with 16 runners left on base.
In the eighth, Teel came into a bases loaded, two-out situation and got a fielder's choice to get out of the jam before sealing the win with a perfect ninth inning.
Oklahoma State returns to action when it hosts a two-game midweek series with Little Rock beginning Tuesday at 4 p.m. Wednesday's series finale is also scheduled for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
