AMES, Iowa — Eleven Oklahoma State track and field athletes qualified for their event finals on day one of the Indoor Big 12 Championship on Friday in the Lied Recreation Center.
Â
After the first day of competition, the Cowboys sit in fifth place in the team standings with 18 points, while the Cowgirls remain in seventh overall with 11 points.
Â
"It was an exciting day," head coach Dave Smith said. "We're in a little bit of a rebuilding year, so it would be easy to get down and get discouraged, but I haven't seen that."
Â
Senior Molly Sughroue was the only first-place finisher for the Pokes on the first day in Ames, taking first overall in the women's mile in 4:50.57. Sughroue is looking to defend her mile title from last season, when she took gold in 4:47.76 by nearly two full seconds.
Â
Long jumper Jacob Fincham-Dukes kicked off the scoring on day one for the Cowboys. The Leeds, England native took sixth with his leap of 7.66m/25-1.75.
Â
Senior Cowboy Luis Martinez kept the momentum alive when he placed third in a stacked 5,000-meter field in 14:04.42, with newcomer Ashenafi Hatte also scoring for the Cowboys taking eighth. Martinez held off a surge from Iowa State's Nathan Rodriguez to keep ISU from going 1-2-3.
Â
Newcomers Garrett Calhoun and Dustan Davidson stepped up in the middle-distance events for the Cowboys. Calhoun took seventh in the 800 meters and Davidson third in the 1,000-meter preliminaries to qualify for Saturday's finals.
Â
Senior Brandon Singleton was the only Cowboy to qualify in the men's 600-yard run. Singleton is looking to improve on last year's sixth-place finish in the same event for the Cowboys.
Â
Senior Cowgirl Gintare Zenkeviciute was the first to score team points for the Cowgirls. Zenkeviciute out-paced Texas' Destiny Collins to take seventh overall in 16:50.99.
Â
Also scoring for the women, long jumper Schuyler Wood-Hilderbrandt continues to impress in an OSU uniform. Wood-Hilderbrandt already sits at No. 2 on the OSU all-time list, and took eighth overall to podium for the Cowgirls.
Â
"That's her first time scoring for us and I'm proud of her," Smith said. "That was a nice surprise."
Â
Kaylee Dodd continued to make waves in the women's 800m, taking second and qualifying for tomorrow's 800m final. Dodd currently owns the No. 10 time in the NCAA in the event, and is looking to build on her fifth-place finish at last year's Indoor Big 12 Championship.
Â
Stephanie Ferrante will join Dodd in the 800-meter finals on Saturday, as she placed sixth to qualify in 2:13.52.
Â
"I think it's going to be a heck of a race," Smith said. "I bet that last 50 meters is going to be an exciting finish."
Â
The Cowgirl sprint duo of Amira Coleman and Ambra Wesley qualified for tomorrow's 600-yard finals, going 5-6 in 1:22.50 and 1:22.74, respectively.
Â
"Ambra Wesley and Amira Coleman ran great races," Smith said. "What I saw from Amira today was something was something she hasn't shown before. There was a lot of confidence, assertiveness and aggression."
Â
Both DMR teams also scored for the Pokes, with both squads taking second. The Cowgirls currently hold the No. 9 time in the nation in the event with their time of 11:01.55 from a week ago.
Â
"What most excites me is some people we haven't counted on before showing up today and making finals and doing whatever we need them to do," Smith said.
Â
The competition continues tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. CT with the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles.
