CLEARWATER, Fla. – The No. 19/15 Oklahoma State softball team concluded its week at the Michele Smith Pediatric Cancer Invitational on Sunday, as the Cowgirls bested Oakland, 7-2, at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.
OSU (8-2) has now gone 4-1 in both of its first two tournaments to open the season. It is the first time since 2011 that the Cowgirls have started off at least 8-2 in their first 10 games.
Oakland jumped on the Cowgirls first scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third. Whitney Whitehorn quickly got OSU back in it though, as she launched a home run for the second straight day to cut the deficit back to one in the home half of the third.
Madi Sue Montgomery completed the Cowgirls' comeback effort when she drove a single through the right side that scored Vanessa Shippy and tied the game. Montgomery also provided the go-ahead runs in the sixth inning when she singled to centerfield, driving in Shippy and Maddi Holcomb.
Shippy was a fixture on base for Oklahoma State throughout, drawing four walks from the leadoff spot in the Cowgirls' batting order. She has walked 12 times this season and leads the Big 12 in that category.
Following Montgomery, freshman Sydney Pennington continued her early-season tear by launching a three-run home run to left center. Pennington has now hit a Big 12-best four home runs and leads the conference with 17 runs batted in this season.
In the circle, Emmie Robertson shut down the Golden Grizzlies over her four innings of work. She racked up nine strikeouts in that time, including a streak of five straight outs recorded via strikeout over the fifth and sixth innings. Robertson earned the win to improve to 4-0 on the year.
She and the Cowgirls will continue invitational play next week when they head to Palm Springs, California, to once again take part in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. OSU will square off with Wisconsin, Oregon State, No. 3 Oregon, Mississippi State and UC Davis out west.
