Abbott, Hubbard Discuss AutoZone Liberty Bowl
December 26, 2018 | Cowboy Football
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Oklahoma State football standouts Britton Abbott and Chuba Hubbard met with members of the media prior to the Cowboys' second practice in Memphis, Tennessee, Wednesday afternoon. A look at what they each had to say about the 2018 season, the upcoming AutoZone Liberty Bowl and more:
Cowboy Back Britton Abbott
On the success of the OSU offense:
"I think that (Taylor Cornelius) has done a great job for us all year, and he's done a good job facilitating and getting everybody the ball, as well as making plays for himself. We've got some guys that can catch the deep ball and some running backs that have got some special talent, so we've just been able to utilize that on offense and it has gone well for us."
On the possibility of an offensive shootout in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl:
"We don't really look at it like that. We just look at our game plan and try to do our job every play. We just try to put up points, give our defense some time (to rest) and they'll make some stops for us, so we're looking forward to the game that they'll have. We don't really look at what the game might be. We just try and execute every play to the best that we can."
On what makes the Oklahoma State offense so special:
"Kind of what I said earlier – our skills complement each other. (Taylor Cornelius) has a really good deep ball and we've got some receivers who can catch the deep ball. It just works well. We've got some good, young (running) backs and everybody comes together and plays fast. It's just kind of our style and our brand of offense, and I think that's worked for us all year."
On the ups and downs of the 2018 season:
"Something that Coach (Mike Gundy) talks about is that no matter what the score is, what your record is, or if it's raining, we just come to execute the best that we can every day. You just come in and work and put your teammates first. That's kind of like how we view this season. Sometimes things go your way, sometimes they don't. That's life and that's football. We're really just competing every day and we're happy to have another opportunity to play. We're just going to do what we can to maximize our chances (of success)."
On Missouri's defense:
"They're pretty physical. They've got good size and good speed. It will be a good challenge for us. A little bit different than what we normally see in the Big 12. In the Big 12, they keep people in front of you, and they're a little bit more physical as a defense. I'm looking forward to the challenge and taking on whatever they're going to throw at us because we've had a long time to prepare for this game."
Running Back Chuba Hubbard
On the Cowboys' reaction to being selected to the Liberty Bowl:
"I think we were all excited. We knew (Missouri) is a good team and Memphis is a good city. I think we're all excited to play in a good bowl that has great competition."
On the season:
"The season didn't go the way we wanted it to, but that's just how football is and how life is also. We're happy to end up here and still make a good bowl game. After everything, we're happy with where we're at."
On Oklahoma State's strengths:
"Obviously our offense is very powerful. We can run the ball, throw it, we're fast-paced and we have the same mindset on defense. We're fast, physical and great all-around as a team."
On Missouri:
"They're an aggressive team. They're sound and they do their job. They're going to be a great opponent."
