Postgame Quotes: Baylor
November 03, 2018 | Cowboy Football
Coach Mike Gundy
"I don't even need a stats sheet to know what happened. Â We're not a good enough football team to have that many penalties and a special teams blunder and give up the touchdown. What I told the team was: Â Even after all that, you had a chance to win the game. Â But I'm really disappointed in being undisciplined with all the personal fouls, the face mask, chop block, late hit. Â Those are things that shouldn't happen. You know, it's interesting, we talk about it, being disciplined and we were undisciplined today, and playing smart football and we didn't play smart football. We have to do a better job of coaching it. Â The general rule is: Â The players will show you how well you're coaching them and what you're working on on Saturdays, so that's what I take out of this. Â Can't give up a blocked punt for a touchdown and then have 125 or however many yards. And then we weren't good on the rush. Â I think we gave up maybe five, six yards of rush. Â I know one of them was a long one but still counts. Â Got to do a better job on the run. Â Got to do a better job minimizing penalties and give us a chance to have success. Â We're just not the team that can overcome that many plays, bad plays, I should say, or undisciplined plays. Â That will be the thing that I'll first start to work on tomorrow when we get them back for practice."
Q. Could you take us through the decision to go for it on fourth down and the play that was called?
"Well, you're on the, what, 34 or something like that. Â You're in fourth and three. Â You get a chance to get a first down, the game's over. Â If you punt it, they are going to get it on the 20. Obviously it didn't -- those 14 yards at that time didn't make a difference, but I would have liked for Taylor to have thrown the ball away, is what I would have liked to happen on that particular play."
Q. Is that something you discussed during the time-out?
"Well, there's a million suggestions going on in time-outs, like all the -- every time during the game and it was no different than any other time-out."
Q. A week after you guys put the ball in Taylor's hands in some pretty significant moments, did you feel even more empowered to let him make that call in that moment on that fourth down play?
"Well, I mean, that's just a base play for us. Â We've run that play for years, so it's not really anything different than any other play."
Q. What changed for your defense down the stretch?
"I think it's penalties. Â I think we prolonged drives, and again, I can't -- it's hard for me to recollect every drive but we are extending drives and giving them free 15-yard penalties, and that's a huge factor. Â It's difficult to get stops and then certainly when you're giving them 15, 20 yards a drive on penalties, that's where it would start for me, just too many undisciplined penalties."
Q. Seemed like in the second half, your running game found some lanes and some holes. Â Is that design stuff you switched at half-time?
"We made a couple adjustments at half but most of it was just game plan. Things that we had not got to. But I thought we -- I thought our play calling and keeping them off balance and run/pass mix, I don't know what it is, 212 and 311 was pretty good, and we didn't turn a ball over. So really, it comes down to what I said. Â We were able to balance the offense, but just too many crucial mistakes and at the wrong time."
Linebacker Justin Phillips
On penalties and how to get passed them...
"I think we need to be more disciplined in all parts of the games. Those extended the drives and kept them on the field longer, helping them score. We will go back and look at what happened. Right now, we just need to be more disciplined."Â
On how do you practice discipline in practice while trying keep up the aggression...
"You practice hard, you practice tackling the right way, you practice finishing plays the right way and other aspects of the game in that nature."
On what changed on the last drive...
"I think the last drive we had a missed tackle. The long penalty helped extend the drive. It was just one of those things where we have to make the play, get off the play and finish the drive."
Wide Receiver Dillon Stoner
On the drive where he was taking hits and making catches...
"It's just a part of the job and I knew when my name was called, I knew I would have step up and make the play."
On inconsistency on offense...
"It is just part of it. I don't think there is any one thing that sticks out. We just need to do our job and everything else will fall into place."Â
Wide Receiver Tylan Wallace
On learning opportunities from playing...
"Really just learning more about the speed of the game and the actual offense and the concept of the plays. I feel that is one thing that I really learned."
On the trick play...
"I was really happy. It was a play that I had been thinking about all week. I knew that I had to make that throw and that I couldn't mess it up. That was a big thing that I am happy that the coaches trusted me with making that play."
Quarterback Taylor Cornelius
On the 4th and 3rd play…
"We were executing so well during that drive and the drive before that we thought that we were better than them, we could get those three yards. Obviously hindsight is 20-20 but if we get that, everyone would talk about how great a call that was."
On the wind strength during the game…
"It shouldn't affect what we do offensively."
On discussion with the coaches in the timeout prior to the play…
"They make the play calls and we run them. I'm not second guessing that at all."
On the scoring lull in the second quarter…
"We marched the ball all the way down there and we just couldn't finish at the end. We just gotta execute better when we're in those key situations like that."
On the scoring drives that worked…
"The O-line played great together. All our backs played good. Obviously the score isn't what we want, but overall I thought everyone else played well. We'd like to have some drives back, put more points on the board, but it is what it is."
On the biggest playing issue that took away the win…
"Just not putting points on the board when we're in the red zone, we gotta capitalize on those opportunities and we didn't do that today."
Â
