Cornelius Garners National Recognition After West Virginia Comeback
November 20, 2018 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State quarterback Taylor Cornelius has earned national praise for his performance in OSU's win over No. 7 West Virginia Saturday, receiving recognition as the Walter Camp National Player of the Week, the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week, a Manning Award Star of the Week and the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.
Cornelius is the seventh OSU player since 2004 to be recognized as the Walter Camp National Player of the Week. It is the first time he has earned the national honor in his career, as well the second time this season he has been the recipient of the Big 12's weekly offensive award and the third time that the Manning Award has shone its spotlight on the Cowboy.
Against the Mountaineers, Cornelius became just the third player in Big 12 history to have 300 yards passing, 100 yards rushing and five passing touchdowns in a game. The last to do it was Baylor's Seth Russell. He is the first OSU player to pass for at least 300 yards and rush for 100 yards in the same game.
Cornelius, in total, threw for 338 yards and five touchdowns on 30-of-46 passing, ran for 106 yards on 13 carries (8.2 yards per carry) and threw a touchdown to Tylan Wallace with 42 seconds remaining to vault Oklahoma State past No. 7 West Virginia, 45-41. He accounted for six total touchdowns Saturday.
It was his sixth 300-yard game of the season. That total is tied for the fourth most by an OSU quarterback - only Brandon Weeden and Mason Rudolph had more in a season.
Cornelius' five passing touchdowns tied his career high and marked his sixth game with at least three passing touchdowns this season. He also added a nine-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter to pull the Cowboys within three points of WVU with less than five minutes remaining.
The Bushland, Texas, native's effort helped guide OSU to its second-straight victory over an A.P. top-10 team at home, marking the first time in school history that a Cowboy team has achieved that feat. His play also led the Pokes to their second-largest comeback victory in school history after coming back from a 17-point deficit at halftime to win the game.
Cornelius now ranks fifth in OSU history in passing touchdowns in a season with 28. He also moved into seventh on the single-season lists in attempts (401) and completions (245).
The conference honor marks OSU's sixth Big 12 Player of the Week award this season, as defensive end Jordan Brailford was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for his performance at Kansas, linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga earned Big 12 Co-Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against Boise State, running back Chuba Hubbard took home Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week accolades for his performance against Missouri State in the season opener, and Cornelius and Zach Sinor were recognized as the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and Co-Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively, after their performance against Texas. It is the second career Big 12 weekly honor for Cornelius.
